By Melissa Pokorny
Located in New York, NY
14"x19"x6"
For Melissa Pokorny, found objects constitute the starting point for elaborate sculptures that have explored gender roles, the public and private spheres, and the nature/culture divide. More recently, her work engages the connection between “things” as potent containers of memory, capably representing loss and estrangement, and the deeply haunted landscape of the everyday. Unremarkable objects become activated and heightened as they are positioned within larger tableau. The compulsion to collect, the status of marginal objects and things, and speculative connections result in fractured narratives that address these occulted objects, the allure of magical thinking and the collapse of the boundaries between the animate and inanimate.
Pokorny has been an exhibiting artist for over twenty years. Her large scale, assemblage-based sculptural works have been widely exhibited at venues across the US. Recent solo shows at Platform Gallery in Seattle and Front Room Gallery in New York augment a long career of solo exhibitions, beginning with Gallery Paule Anglim, in San Francisco and continuing with Bodybuilder and Sportsman in Chicago. Selected group exhibitions include venues such as Yerba Buena Gardens, Southern Exposure, Victoria Room, and New Langton Arts in San Francisco, Foodhouse Gallery in Los Angeles, Gallery 400, Columbia College,The James Hotel, and Devening Projects +Editions in Chicago, and The Richard Peeler...

Glissard : large-scale steel sculpture
Located in New York, NY
A large-scale steel sculpture by Naomi Press. Signed with initials.
Naomi Press is a female abstract sculptor, who was one of the very few women working in large scale with steel in the second half of the 20th Century. Press’s art was admired by a well known and respected dealer André Emmerich as well as renowned art critic Clement Greenberg, with whom Press developed a friendship. Greenberg, arguably one of the most influential critics in the second half of the 20th Century, praised her sculptures and encouraged her to work in abstraction. Curators Robert Metzger and Karen Wilkin also wrote about her work. The eminent art historian Edward Lucie-Smith curated her 2011 retrospective in London. Works of Naomi Press are on par with such artists as Beverly Pepper, Claire Falkenstein and Louise Nevlson. Her creations have an imposing presence due to their masterful execution and aesthetic beauty.
Naomi Press was born in Poland and later lived in South Africa, England, and USA. This unique blend of cultures informs her art. Ballet is another significant influence in her life and practice. In her youth Press was an award winning ballet dancer and received offers from esteemed institutions such as the Royal Ballet...

By Elizabeth Turk
Located in New York, NY
Born in Pasadena and raised in Orange County, Elizabeth Turk earned her M.F.A. at the Rinehart School of Sculpture, Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore.
In Turk’s work, the shape of the line is created by extreme loss. That is, the reductive process of carving creates a positive, fragile form in which the absence of the original material is a focus. Turk encourages us to consider how nature has shaped these organic materials long before the artist’s manipulation of them into new forms. When viewed as components in a complex natural system, their singular beauty and inherent mystery is revealed. Turk compels us to view works of art not only as objects to be coveted and collected, but also as expressions of the natural world and our evolving relation to it.
A recipient of numerous awards, including a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship (2010), a Barnett and Annalee Newman Foundation Fellowship (2010), and a Smithsonian Artist Research Fellowship (2011), Turk is internationally recognized for transforming her signature medium of marble into strikingly intricate objects that defy convention and challenge our preconceptions of what marble can do. Through the use of electric grinders, dental tools...
