Black Lacquer Screen with Cranes and Gold Leaf, Four-Panel Room Divider
Located in Yonkers, NY
A striking display of artistry, this Chinese lacquered folding screen showcases a mesmerizing composition of red-crowned cranes in flight against a golden backdrop. The four-panel construction features a dynamic arrangement of cranes, their detailed plumage accentuated by subtly raised lacquer outlines, lending a dimensional quality to the artwork. The luminous gold ground, possibly applied with gold leaf or gilded foil, creates a radiant contrast to the deep black lacquer frame. Delicate hand-painted floral motifs soften the edges, introducing a refined decorative element. On the reverse, an equally elegant painted landscape unfolds, featuring songbirds perched among flowering branches and lotus blossoms. This dual-sided design enhances versatility, allowing the screen to function as both a decorative statement piece and a functional room divider. Whether placed as a dramatic backdrop in a dining room, used as an ornate headboard...

Vladimir Kagan Architectural Louvered & Illuminated Room Divider with COA, 1967
By Vladimir Kagan
Located in Brooklyn, NY
An incredibly rare louvered and illuminated room divider in solid walnut floating over a cylindrical brass foot, custom-designed by Vladimir Kagan circa 1967. Six sculptural, marquise-shaped slats are angled at 45 degrees to the frame and flank the light box which houses a single 6-foot fluorescent bulb. Authenticated by and registered with the Vladimir Kagan Design Group, this piece is offered to the collector with all corresponding documents including certificate of authenticity, company letter, related archival photos, and numbered registration plaque. While their archivists have seen similar slatted dividers that Kagan designed (see last image in this listing), they’d not seen one with an incorporated lighting element before and thus feel that this example may well be one-of-a-kind or, at the very least, from a strictly limited run. That said, it seems that this general concept of combining lighting with room partitioning...

Japanese Calligraphy Two-Panel Folding Shodō Screen with Gold Leaf Accents

A Japanese screen with hand-painted calligraphy with maker's red seal. This striking two-panel folding screen is a masterful representation of shodō, the Japanese art of calligraphy. Bold, flowing brushstrokes sweep across the panels, capturing the elegance and spontaneity intrinsic to this centuries-old tradition. Crafted with sumi ink on washi paper, the calligraphy radiates energy and refinement, framed by golden borders that lend a touch of luminosity to the piece. The screen's lightweight wooden frame, combined with its durable yet delicate paper panels, exemplifies the balance of strength and grace characteristic of Japanese design. Whether used as a decorative accent or a room divider, this piece invites contemplation and artistry into any space. Its compact two-panel format makes it ideal for smaller interiors, serving as a focal point in a study, library, or entryway.
