Circa 1930 German Side Table
By Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot 1
Located in New York, NY
Our table was made of birch, solid and veneered, stained a rich brown, and topped off with a slab of Bohemian breccia marble. We date it to around 1928, and attribute the design to Fritz August Breuhaus de Groot, who coined the term Kultivierte Sachlichkeit (Cultured Objectivity) to describe his work, and distinguish it from the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) practiced by his contemporaries Walter Gropius, Mies van der Rohe, and Lily Reich. The table bears a passing resemblance to a considerably simplified, marble-topped ovoid one that he designed for his 1934 Berlin living room.
Breuhaus was a man on the make. The first of his three marriages was to the daughter of an industrialist, who financed the building of luxury villas and workers’ housing designed by his son-in-law. In 1929, Breuhaus, the son of a dentist, added “de Groot” to his name, falsely linking himself to a distinguished family of painters. By then, he’d been fudging his academic record for years. That didn’t prevent a teaching appointment at the State University of Bavaria, which allowed him to add the prestigious “Herr Professor” prefix to his name. Yet he never followed through on the teaching — he was far too busy designing more luxury villas (commissions he accepted only if he could furnish them as well), and products for his own company, which included furniture, textiles, wallpapers, lighting, and fine silver. In addition to designing aircraft interiors for Lufthansa, and pullman railroad...

Stacklab, "Gold Cube", Contemporary Side Table, Canada, 2016
By STACKLAB
Located in New York, NY
The Cube Series was first founded in 2013 through a partnership with an engineer-turned-concrete-artisan in Toronto to make productive (re)-use of a historic, decommissioned pump pattern that had been in storage locally for over a half century.
Patterns are the original ‘positives’ used in the production of sand-cast metal parts, a method of casting dating back to 1300BC. While patterns are still commonly used in manufacturing, they are regularly decommissioned and archived in response to industry innovation. There is a growing abundance of unproductive Industrial patterns in foundries and factories.
STACKLAB identified that storing these patterns indefinitely is a notable waste of space and resources - especially in a city like Toronto with high rents and high utility costs.
For this series, STACKLAB focused specifically on repurposing patterns from 1890-1950. During this period, patterns were often hand carved by skilled craftspeople whose specialized knowledge of metallurgy and woodworking has been mostly forgotten in today’s era of computer-aided manufacturing. The Cube Series proposed a system for converting disused historic patterns into molds to create contemporary sculptural furnishing.
The result is The Cube Series that reintegrates decommissioned manufacturing materials into the scaled production of useful, modern objects...

Square Side Table Burned Ash Elm Thomas Throop Black Creek Designs In Stock
By Black Creek Designs LLC
Located in New Canaan, CT
The Oriel III side table features a blackened solid ash base which has been burned in the traditional Japanese shou sugi ban technique. This technique when used on ash reveals the deep richness of the open grain and creates a unique black quality which is heightened by the hand rubbed oil finish. The cantilevered top and waterfall joined leg in highly figured elm complete the structure. The unique elm plank has been stabilized with the use butterflies. This is done on the underside so as to not impose on the character of the figured elm has been cerused to further highlight the grain that flows from top to leg. The heightened contrast is created both in color and in form. The mass of the black leg frame serves as a perfect balance to the the cerused and cantilevered top. The overall effect is a highly sculptural table that is ultimately very functional. Each element is selected, shaped, joined and finished so as to create a unified design.
The Oriel table is designed and made at the Black Creek Designs studio in New Canaan, CT by Thomas Throop...
