Over the Rainbow was painted during the lockdown. Each animal and flower represent different things, the eggs and tadpoles show new life, the four-leaf clover is for luck, the bee produces the elixir of life in the honeycomb, the owl is wise, the rabbit symbolizes fertility and family. The frog navigates between the physical, emotional, and spiritual planes. Extractivism is a movement started by Zumloh where you only paint happy things. The rainbow became a symbol for the NHS.

Henrietta Caledon was born in London in 1964. Studied art and history of art for O’level and A’level at West Heath School and then Queensgate School. Trained at Xium International design service company in 1982/83. This wonderful Post Impressionist exhibited horses portrait oil painting is by noted British artist Edgar Downs. Painted in 1912 it was exhibited the same year at the Royal Academy London. The painting is of two magnificent horses, one white one brown, waiting patiently while a man leans over to open the gate. Beyond is a canopy of trees. The impressionist brushwork and strong impasto create a light which is vibrant and colourful. This is an excellent example of Downs' work and one can see his infinity with the natural world.
Signed and date lower right.
Provenance. Exhibited at the Royal Academy London 1912 no. 789.
Condition. Oil on canvas, image size is 36 inches by 30 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a complementary frame 44 inches by 38 inches and in good condition.
Edgar Downs, ROI, (1876–1963) was a British painter, known for painting agricultural scenes. Downs was born on 12 October 1876 at Claughton, Birkenhead, the son of William Downs. He was educated at Birkenhead School and the Academy of Fine Arts, Munich, and received a silver medal there. He exhibited paintings called Our Daily Bread and The Edge of the Bog at the Royal Academy in 1911, when his address was given as 12 Bedford Gardens, Kensington, London. His other addresses included Arun House at Clymping, West Sussex, and latterly Mudeford, Hampshire where he died. During World War I, he served as a war artist, including spells at Gallipoli in 1915 and Salonica in 1916. He was assigned to the 1st County of London Yeomanry in July 1918. One of his paintings made at this time hangs in the Headquarters of the Inns of Court & City Yeomanry. Two of his works, Gathering Kelp (1914) and Cattle Ploughing in an Open Landscape (c. 1914), are in the collection of Fordingbridge Town Council at Fordingbridge Town Hall. He was a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters ("ROI"), the London Sketch...

Landscape painting of seagulls fishing in the sea by Henrietta Caledon.
There is a family of seagulls that live on my roof, and I became fascinated by them during the lockdown. They are so agile, and they represent ‘soaring above the drama’, ‘looking at things from a different angle’, adaptability, stamina, resourcefulness, and freedom.
The turquoise and blue colours of the sea almost swallow the gulls in the waves and their orange beaks are a wonderful contrast.
Henrietta Caledon was born in London in 1964. Studied art and history of art for O’level and A’level at West Heath School and then Queensgate School. Trained at Xium International design service company in 1982/83. Marcel-Louis Baugniet was born in Liege on the 18th March 1896. Painter, theorist, furniture designer, creator of posters, costumes and stage sets, he was one of the main defenders of the notion of Pure Plastic Arts.
Baugniet studied painting at the Royal Academy of Beaux-Arts in Brussels where he mixed with Paul Delvaux, René Magritte, Victor Servrancks and Pierre-Louis Flouquet. He spent some time in Paris and decided that he would become an iconoclastic and avant garde artist. He discovered abstract art with Kandinsky, Kupka, Mondrian and Delaunay and with wonder and stupeur he also learnt of the constructivist movement, which was born in Russia with Malevitch and Lissitsky. In 1922, Baugniet then 26 years old returned to Brussels and married the Russian danser Akarova for whom he designed costumes and stage sets.
M-L Baugniet painted, designed and engraved some superb series of dansers and sportspersons (the « Kaloprosopies »), works entrenched with impeccable lines of constructed art. He painted with contemplation geometric compositions which mixed a grace of colours with the rigour of shapes. Baugniet wrote articles on esthetics and applicated arts in the magasine 7 Arts and edited, with the Dutch architect Van Tonderen, the manifesto of the movement that they called « Le beau, C’est l'utile » (beauty is useful)
Towards the end of the 20s, he separated from Akarova and in 1927 he opened his own Home Decor shop.
With regret Baugniet laid down his paint brushes and threw himself into interior design and the creation of tubular furniture, everyday objects and carpets. He remarried the Russian Olga Reich. He created a circle of ideas that included artists, writers, politicians and intellectuals of all kinds.
Throughout his career, Baugniet participated in numerous international exhibitions of decorative art. In 1977 abstraction, constructivism and Marcel-Louis Baugniet were rediscovered. Decorated and lauded, Baugniet began to paint once more and co-founded the magasine Mesures with Jo Delahaut...
