A cockfight is a sport between two roosters (cocks), or more accurately gamecocks, held in a ring called a cockpit. The history of raising fowl for fighting goes back 6,000 years. The first documented use of the word gamecock, denoting use of the cock as to a “game”, a sport,pastime or entertainment, was recorded in 1646, after the term “cock of the game” used by George Wilson, in the earliest known book on the sport of cockfighting in The Commendation of Cocks and Cock Fighting in 1607. Asprey was established in England in 1781 and founded as a silk printing business by William Asprey, it soon became a luxury emporium. In 1841, William Asprey's elder son Charles went into partnership with a stationer located on London's Bond Street. In 1847 the family broke with this partner and moved into 167 New Bond Street, the premises Asprey occupies today.
From its central London location Asprey advertised 'articles of exclusive design and high quality, whether for personal adornment or personal accompaniment and to endow with richness and beauty the table and homes of people of refinement and discernment.' An early speciality was dressing cases. Asprey crafted traditional cases and designs, mostly in leather, suitable for the new style of travel ushered in by railways. The main competitors at the time were H.J. Cave & Sons. Asprey was recognised for its expertise when it won a gold medal for its dressing cases at the International Exhibition of 1862 but lost out to its rivals, H.J. Cave & Sons in 1867.
The company consolidated its position through acquisitions. In 1859 Asprey absorbed Edwards, an award winning maker of dressing cases and holder of a Royal Warrant. The company also purchased the Alfred Club at 22 Albemarle Street, which backed on to the New Bond Street store and meant that Asprey now had entrances on two of London's most fashionable streets.
In 1862, Asprey was granted a Royal Warrant by Queen Victoria. The Prince of Wales, later to be crowned Edward VII, granted another Royal Warrant. In 1953, for the coronation of Elizabeth II, Asprey paid homage with the Asprey Coronation Year Gold Collection, which featured a dessert, coffee and liqueur service in 18-carat gold and weighed almost 27 pounds. In April 1953, it went on show in the New Bond Street store and subsequently toured the United States.
As the business grew, the company acquired manufacturing facilities and hired silversmiths, goldsmiths, jewellers and watchmakers including Ernest Betjeman, the father of the distinguished poet John Betjeman, one of the most highly regarded craftsman and designers of his day.
In the twenties, commissions poured in from around the world, from American millionaire J. Pierpont Morgan to potentates such as the Maharaja of Patiala, who commissioned a huge teak travelling trunk for each of his wives in which each trunk was fitted with solid silver washing and bathing utensils with waterspouts of ornate tiger head and lined with blue velvet. Just back from our silversmith's workshop, it has been professionally cleaned and polished, restoring it to it's former glory; any shading are reflections; minor wear to the interior commensurate with age and use.
A magnificent piece of history and as relevant for today's interiors as it was nearly 100 years ago.
Excellent condition spanning 7 1/2" handle to spout x 4" x 7" tall. Any black marks seen on the body of the jug / pitcher are shadows not marks.

Sue et Mare
The spirit of collaboration was alive in the age of Art Deco. No duo quite exemplified this ideal more than the one known as Süe et Mare. Taking their knowledge of fine art and their shared experiences in the war with them, Louis Süe and André Mare were able to shape trends in the shift from Art Nouveau to Art Deco and beyond. Their designs, inspired by Cubism, excited the Paris Salon of the time and remain relevant even today.
Louis Süe was born in Bordeaux in 1875 to a wine merchant and his wife. Drawn to the arts, Süe abandoned a path which would have led him into the École Polytechnique to attend the École des Beaux-Arts in 1893. There he studied painting as well as architecture design, and in 1902 was able to exhibit with a number of his contemporaries in the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne. After working in various Parisian artists’ workshops and spending time in Vienna (where he was introduced to Cubism), Süe joined L’Atelier Français, an interior design firm made up of a number of his contemporaries, and where he first met André Mare.
André Mare was born in the Norman town of Argentan in 1885. Feeling stifled by his conventional upbringing, he left in 1904 to enroll in the École des Arts Decoratifs. In 1906, Mare also exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d’Automne, showing his furniture design and setting himself apart as a leader among his cohort. In 1912, along with Marcel Duchamp and others (and concurrent to his involvement with L’Atelier Français) Mare created La Maison Cubiste, a section at that year’s Salon d’Automne dedicated to radical interior design.
The outbreak of the First World War briefly interrupted the two men’s collaboration. Süe was drafted into the French Army and served in the Greek campaign. Mare, meanwhile, developed new camouflage techniques for the French, British, and Italian armies using his knowledge of Cubism. But this function did not keep him from the front. In 1916, he was wounded by shrapnel in Picardy while helping establish a lookout post, and in the same year was awarded the Military Cross by George V of England.
In 1919, Süe and Mare resumed their professional relationship by cooperating with Gustave Jaulmes on designing the victory celebrations in Paris for the war’s end. The next year the pair founded the Compagnie des arts français, focusing on creating designs for furnishings and interior accessories. While adhering to the Art Deco style, their designs were more conventional, harking back to the Louis XIV and earlier periods, and less focused on geometric intricacy. Highly decorative, their pieces featured flair such as sculpted floral and fruit motifs, scalloped edges, and inlays of ivory and mother of pearl.
Working primarily as decorators and furniture designers, Süe and Mare did find time to continue participating in exhibitions, particularly the 1925 Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes, where they constructed an actual museum of contemporary art. Other projects included the booth for the Ambassade de France and the interiors of the steamship SS Île de France.

The stoppers are not the originals, and are not matching. There is a bit of damage to the bottom of the handle, and a slight dent to one of the condiment holders. We have not cleaned inside the bottles. The silver plating has age related patina, we have given it just a light clean.

According to the Census, William Marriott Briggs (1845-1934) was born at Chesterfield. He was the son of William Briggs; his mother was Sarah Marriott Briggs.
In 1871, aged 25, he was enumerated in the Census as an ‘electro-plate manufacturer’, living with his parents at Brocco Bank. Antique Victorian Silver Plated 6 Bottle Cruet Set Wade Wingfield Wilkins 19th C

This is a gorgeous antique silver plated cruet set bearing the makers mark of the renowned silversmith Wade, Wingfield Wilkins & Co and circa 1860 in date.
The set comprises a beautifully decorative silver plated cruet stand holding six exquisite cut glass condiment bottles traditionally for chilli, soy, cayenne, vinegar, oil and ketchup.
The antique silver cruet features a central rectangular shaped handle and body on bun feet, the six cut glass cruet bottles feature three with glass stoppers and three with silver plated lids.
This is truly a special item and will attract the maximum amount of attention, the quality and craftsmanship are undeniable.
Condition:
In excellent condition with no dings, dents or signs of repair. Please see photos for confirmation.

The firm was established in 1751 (according to an undocumented source) and by 1816 was listed as Hoult, Rowbottam, Wingfield & Wade in Tenter Street. In 1818, John Hoult withdrew and henceforth the firm was run by John Rowbottam, John Wingfield, and Richard Wade. The firm specialised in table cutlery. Succeeded in 1832 to Wade, Wingfield, Rowbotham, and Co. The partnership between Richard Wade, John Wingfield, John Rowbotham, Alfred Rowbotham and Henry Colley was dissolved in 1851.
