Maxime Lalanne "Rade de Bordeaux" original etching C. 1868
Located in Atlanta, GA
This is a mid 19th century etching entitled "Rade de Bordeaux, Janvier" (Port Of Bordeaux In Winter), Maxime Lalanne in London in 1868. The etching depicts many boats in the busy harbor of Bordeaux, including small sailboats, as well as tall ships. Another harbor is seen in the distance across the river on the left. Snow covered buildings are on the left and extending long distances in the distant background. Many people occupy the road and ground centrally and on the left along with some horses or mules attached to carts. The sky is a wintery gray.
It is signed in the plate in the lower left, the title and date are in the center and Bordeaux and the year are included in script along the top of a wall in the lower left of the engraving. This etching is held by many museums and institutions, including The National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C.
François Antoine Maxime Lalanne (1827-1886) was a leading French etcher and painter of landscapes and urban views, who was at the forefront of the French revival of etching during the 1860's. He grew up in Bordeaux, but he refined his artistic skills and worked in Paris. His art was first exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1852 and he continued to regularly show both etchings and paintings there until the mid 1880's. He was also the author of several important books on the subjects of etching and other graphic arts. He was a founding member of the Societe des Aquafortistes, along with Auguste Delatre, Cadart, Ribot and Bracquemond. Lalanne created over one hundred and fifty fine etchings. Lalanne's unique style of art influenced many French and English artists in the twentieth century.
Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) was a British artist, art critic and author. He was particularly focussed on contemporary graphic art and printmaking techniques. He frequently wrote about the theory of the English Etching Revival, contributing to the establishment of etching as an original and major art medium. He was the editor of The Portfolio (1870-1893), a major arts publication dealing extensively with the art of etching. His most influential book was "Etching and Etchers", which detailed the creative and technical aspects of etching and engraving. The first edition was published in 1868 and included original etchings by Jongkind, Haden and Palmer, as well later states of 17th century Dutch masters. He published a second edition in 1876 without any original etchings. A third edition was published in 1880 in a large paper edition, limited to one thousand copies, which included twenty original etchings from contemporary artists Whistler, Haden, Palmer, Israels, Jacque, Jacquemart, Lalanne, Appian, Legros, Herkomer. including this original Lalanne etching...

Burt Barr: The Long Dissolve Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
PHOTOGRAPH
Print made with archival pigments on fine art rag paper with glossy finish
12.00 x 17.00 in
30.5 x 43.2 cm
Edition of 250This work comes with a Certificate of Authenticity and an artist signed label on verso.
"I shot the video in 2000, in my home in SoHo. I knew prior to shooting what I wanted to do and I envisioned the piece exactly as it turned out. First, I experimented with a metal cookie tin placed on a hot stove. It didn't work because the ice cube melted too quickly. I tried a hairdryer but as the cube melted, the hair-blower blew the remaining cube away. Thus, I let the cube melt on it's own accord in real time. It took about three hours to fully dissolve into a puddle of water. I used a glass plate on Glassene paper: all that transparency made the black lines of the plate look line a charcoal line drawing. The title is important because it precisely explains the work: The Long Dissolve is exactly of an ice cube dissolving." —Burt Barr
Claiming that "black and white are the only two colors I'll ever need," Burt Barr is a believer in the single take and the static shot. Meant to be projected directly onto a wall and looped for continual viewing, his films equate more to hanging drawings or black and white photographs than they are moving pictures...

Jeff Wall Fortified Door Print 2008
Located in New York, NY
The documentary image fortified door is a portrait of urban defence that denies entry not only to visitors but also to the viewer. Tightly cropped and shot nearly head-on, it offers little information about its location or context (although small clues can be found at the edges of the photo). The door and the picture of it share a particularly ambivalent position in time, quoting idioms from the past but bearing traces of the present.
Jeff Wall adopts the 19th century poet Baudelaire's famous description of one of his contemporaries as "a painter of modern life" to describe his own very different work: huge transparencies mounted onto light boxes which diffuse a brilliant glow of white light evenly through his photographs of contemporary urban scenes and 'constructed' social situations.
Jeff Wall is foremost among the pioneering artists who since the late 1960s have brought photography to the forefront of contemporary art. His constructed images employ the latest sophisticated technology in the creation of compelling tableaux, which are evocative of subjects ranging from Hollywood cinema to nineteenth-century history painting. When exhibited in their glowing light boxes they evoke both the seduction of the cinema screen and the physical presence of minimalist sculptures such as Dan Flavin's fluorescent light installations or Donald Judd's metal and Perspex wall reliefs.
All of these elements - traditional figurative painting, cinema, minimalism, conceptual art, documentary photography - are consciously evoked and explored in Wall's work. Associated closely since the late 1960s with conceptual artists such as Dan Graham...

18th Century French Map and City View of Joppe/Jaffa 'Tel Aviv' by Sanson
By Nicolas Sanson
Located in Alamo, CA
An original antique engraving entitled "Joppe; in ’t Hebreeusch by ouds Japho; hedendaags Japha, of Jaffa; volgens d’aftekening gedaan 1668", by Nicholas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600 - 1667). This is a view of the city of Joppe (in Hebrew Japho), now called Japha or Jaffa, the harbor portion of modern day Tel Aviv, Israel as it appeared in 1668 . It depicts a very busy harbor with numerous boats. A large ship on the left appears to be firing its canons and a small ship on the right appears to be sitting very low in the water, either heavily loaded with cargo or sinking. The town is seen on the far shore with a fortress on a hill across in the background. The map is printed from the original Sanson copperplate and was published in 1709 by his descendants.
The map is presented in an ornate brown wood frame embellished by gold-colored leaves and gold inner trim with a double mat; the outer mat is cream-colored and the inner mat is black. There is a central vertical fold, as issued. There are two small spots in the lower margin and one in the upper margin, as well as two tiny spots adjacent to the central fold. 1717 is written below the date 1668 in the inscription. The map is otherwise in very good condition.
Another map of the "Holy Land" (by Claes Visscher in 1663), with an identical style frame and mat is available. This pair of maps would make a wonderful display grouping. Please see Reference #LU5206220653552. A discount is available for the purchase of the pair of maps.
Artist: Nicholas Sanson d'Abbeville (1600-1667) and his descendents were important French cartographer's active through the 17th century. Sanson started his career as a historian and initially utilized cartography to illustrate his historical treatises. His maps came to the attention of Cardinal Richelieu and then King Louis XIII of France, who became a supporter and sponsor. He subsequently appointed Sanson 'Geographe Ordinaire du Roi' the official map maker to the king. Sanson not only created maps for the king, but advised him on geographical issues and curated his map collection...

Awol Erizku Hammer, Stick, Same Thang Limited Edition Print
By Phaidon
Located in New York, NY
Print: Six-color full-bleed silkscreen on Coventry Rag 335gsm
Size: 610 x 508 mm (24 x 20 in)
This work is a varied edition of 50, of which 25 are blue and 25 are yellow
This work is signed on a label adhered on verso
Hammer, Stick, Same thang, 2017 is an edition that is based off an original painting. In this work, Awol has appropriated the iconic arm & hammer image and logo which is both localized and ubiquitous and appears across the country in interchangeable locales, signifying a variety of ethnicities and communities. Stripping the logo of its relationship to the ancient mythologies and products and the surrounding urban landscapes, it becomes both a meditation on post-Warholian production, and a response to color theory recalling Joseph Albers' pedagogical exercises that influenced Erizku when he was a student at Cooper Union. The original artwork was painted on sheets of OSB instead of canvas and teeters on the divide between the studio and the street responding to different moments in art history, as well as the constantly evolving surface of the city.
