A exquisite abstract modernist sculpture by noted Cuban-American sculptor Juan Nickford (1925-2001). The piece was executed as scale model prototype for a large architectural steel sculpture commissioned and installed at Lido Beach on Long Island in 1955. Fully signed by the artist on the base. This sculpture is a very early work and one of the earliest American commissions, by Juan Nickford. Nickford was born in Cuba and studied at the Havana School of Architecture before immigrating to America in 1948. Nickford was a member of the New York Sculptors Guild and held the title of Professor Emeritus of Art at City College of New York. He also taught at the University of Hartford and Smith College. His work was shown at the Whitney Museum and the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Los Angeles County Museum, Fordham University and Lever House, among other venues. His work is found in the collection of the Smith College Museum of Art and the Spaeth Foundation in New York. Among his many commissions are pieces for the Socony Oil Building and the Trade Show Building in New York and the SS Santa Rosa.
