Braddock Steel

Swoon has created this very special NFT of Braddock Steel, which will be auctioned to benefit the vision of Za’Kiyah House: to reduce homelessness, addiction, and recidivism. Inspired by the award-winning documentary Struggles in Steel, the blockprint portrait Braddock Steel was crafted in conversation with filmmakers Ray Henderson and Tony Buba, and features one of the subjects of the film, Henderson Thomas. The Mon Valley has experienced the wide-ranging consequences of extractive capitalism and the globalized economy, which prioritize profits and shareholders over workers and communities. For centuries, industrial interests have attempted to divide the working class against itself along racial lines, though many campaigns have fought back against this discrimination. These jobs have left, and others have not replaced them. In this portrait, the young man looks away, while his arm loosely cradles scenes from Braddock's industrial heritage. The collector receives Braddock Steel, a digital artwork that can be displayed in the metaverse. Just as powerfully, they are buying something real and tangible for Za’Kiyah House in Pittsburgh, PA: a repair to the roof, new functional gutters, or paint for volunteers. These artworks are emblems of that patronage. Ronna Davis Moore founded Za'Kiyah House in 2016, and their past and present programs include Richard's Place for Men, Donnelle's Safe Haven for Women, Outreach: Come Heal with Me, and Recovery On Frankstown.

Swoon’s work centers the transformative capacity of art as a catalyst for healing within communities experiencing crisis.“For me, Swoon is not quite a name but more like a code word for the trickster’s belief in miracles. If you break a rule over here and move a boundary over there, and have a moment of creative play, and create something of beauty—through all of those actions, combined with a lot of dedication, you can start to create little cracks in the facade of impossibility and inevitability. Through those cracks little possibilities come up, and they ask to be born. And then they’re born and they start unifying and linking with each other, and that’s a really powerful force. And that’s the force I live my life by.” - Swoon

Exhibition Notes

Braddock Steel is presented in “Metaglyphs,” curated by Katie Peyton Hofstadter. Metaglyphs showcases artists using digital technologies to generate layers of meaning on more than one experiential plane, and includes work by Alfredo Salazar-Caro, Amy Kurzweil, Claudia Hart, LaJuné McMillian, LoVid, Carla Gannis, FakeShamus, Morehshin Allahyari, Savannah Spirit, and Swoon.

Metaglyph roughly translates to “beyond symbol” — an artwork representing the interconnected relationship between object materiality and digital existence. For as long as humans have told stories, we’ve been interested in objects that exist at the border between worlds. From ancient mythology to modern science fiction, our archetypal stories are filled with magical objects that serve as keys, black mirrors of culture and false identity, secret weapons with hidden powers. These NFT tokenized artworks use multiple techniques — ranging from digital simulation technology to 3D modeling to glitch — to probe the boundaries and consequences of our digital and analog desires.

The goal is not to replace reality, but to return to and enrich it. When we step through the looking glass — when we board the vessel — what will we see?

“These artworks are vessels that serve as a link between the familiar and the unknown. It’s the butterfly pinned to the board, and the butterfly rising above it. Not just the shark’s tooth, but its bite.”

–– Katie Peyton Hofstadter
