Brooklyn Brownstone

Apartment by Kelly Behun | STUDIO in Brooklyn, NY

This was a fun project for the home of my senior designer Alex P White and his partner, also an artist. Their home, in a classic Brooklyn brownstone, was like an evolving exhibition, so depending on where they were artistically every month it looked completely different. They had new ideas on a daily basis, so my role was equal parts sounding board, mom, arbitrator and aesthetic editor. I am inspired by interiors with unexpected elements so was immediately onboard with their impulse to spray paint poetry on the walls. The prewar details were a perfect backdrop for the custom gold laminate platform bed, Richard Etts plaster lamp in the form of a pair of hands, and frisky Kitty sculptures by Alex’s partner Strauss Bourque La-France. What this project perfectly illustrates is something I strive to never forget: things don’t need to be blue-chip or pricey to come together in a beautiful way. For me, it’s more about a personal and emotional connection and how things interact in the space
