Greenwich Village Duplex

Apartment by 1100 Architect in New York, NY

This duplex renovation in Greenwich Village transformed a compact former artist’s studio into a richly detailed, cohesive living environment. For two painter clients, 1100 Architect approached the design with an emphasis on two qualities that inform lived lives: tactility and intimacy.

Inspired by shipbuilding efficiency and Japanese storage practices, the stairway conceals integrated cabinets while acting as a sculptural centerpiece to the home. Sequenced poplar veneer panels clad the stair base and flow through the apartment, visually unifying disparate volumes and functional areas. The wood surfaces were stained with aniline dye, allowing the poplar’s natural aging to unpredictably evolve over time. Every material was selected for its tonal character and aging process, expressing time’s passage through variability of hue and texture.
