Lanterns And Chandeliers For Sale on 1stDibs

At 1stDibs, there are several options of lanterns and chandeliers available for sale. Frequently made of metal, glass and brass, all lanterns and chandeliers available were constructed with great care. We have 1904 antique and vintage lanterns and chandeliers in-stock, while there are 90 modern editions to choose from as well. Lanterns and chandeliers have been produced for many years, with earlier versions available from the 18th Century and newer variations made as recently as the 21st Century. Lanterns and chandeliers made by Mid-Century Modern designers — as well as those associated with Art Deco — are very popular at 1stDibs. Lanterns and chandeliers have been a part of the life’s work for many furniture makers, but those produced by Ercole Barovier, Holophane and Barovier&Toso are consistently popular.

How Much are Lanterns And Chandeliers?

Prices for lanterns and chandeliers start at $1 and top out at $390,000 with the average selling for $2,477.

Finding the Right chandeliers-pendant-lights for You

Chandeliers — simple in form, inspired by candelabras and originally made of wood or iron — first made an appearance in early churches. For those wealthy enough to afford them for their homes in the medieval period, a chandelier's suspended lights likely exuded imminent danger, as lit candles served as the light source for fixtures of the era. Things have thankfully changed since then, and antique and vintage chandeliers and pendant lights are popular in many interiors today.

While gas lighting during the late 18th century represented an upgrade for chandeliers — and gas lamps would long inspire Danish architect and pioneering modernist lighting designer Poul Henningsen — it would eventually be replaced with the familiar electric lighting of today.

The key difference between a pendant light and a chandelier is that a pendant incorporates only a single bulb into its design. Don’t mistake this for simplicity, however. An Art Deco–styled homage to Sputnik from Murano glass artisans Giovanni Dalla Fina (note: there is more than one lighting fixture that shares its name with the iconic mid-century-era satellite — see Gino Sarfatti’s design too), with handcrafted decorative elements supported by a chrome frame, is just one stunning example of the elaborate engineering that can be incorporated into every component of a chandelier.

Chandeliers have evolved over time, but their classic elegance has remained unchanged. Not only will the right chandelier prove impressive in a given room, but it can also offer a certain sense of practicality. These fixtures can easily illuminate an entire space, while their elevated position prevents them from creating glare or straining one’s eyes. Certain materials, like glass, can complement naturally lit settings without stealing the show. Brass, on the other hand, can introduce an alluring, warm glow. While LEDs have earned a bad reputation for their perceived harsh bluish lights and a loss of brightness over their life span, the right design choices can help harness their lighting potential and create the perfect mood. A careful approach to lighting can transform your room into a peaceful and cozy nook, ideal for napping, reading or working.

For midsize spaces, a wall light or sconce can pull the room together and get the lighting job done. Perforated steel rings underneath five bands of handspun aluminum support a rich diffusion of light within Alvar Aalto's Beehive pendant light, but if you’re looking to brighten a more modest room, perhaps a minimalist solution is what you’re after. The mid-century modern furniture designer Charlotte Perriand devised her CP-1 wall lamps in the 1960s, in which a repositioning of sheet-metal plates can redirect light as needed.

The versatility and variability of these lighting staples mean that, when it comes to finding something like the perfect chandelier, you’ll never be left hanging. From the whimsical — like the work of Beau & Bien’s Sylvie Maréchal, frequently inspired by her dreams — to the classic beauty of Paul Ferrante's fixtures, there is a style for every room. With designs for pendant lights and chandeliers across eras, colors and materials, you’ll never run out of options to explore on 1stDibs.

Questions About Lanterns And Chandeliers
  • 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019

A lantern is a portable lighting device.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A pagoda lantern is a type of Japanese lantern that looks like a light basket or a light tower. It is a traditional lantern and is generally made of stone, wood, or metal. This type of lantern was used in Buddhist temples to line and illuminate paths. Shop a range of antique and vintage pagoda lanterns on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Japanese lanterns are often made of paper or silk, with a bamboo wood frame. Traditionally a candle supplied the light, but many of them today are either battery or solar operated. Shop a collection of Japanese lanterns from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2024
The difference between a lamp and a lantern is that a floor lamp or a table lamp is a generally stationary fixture, whereas lanterns are portable. Lanterns are typically designed with hooks or hoops on top, to allow them to be carried or hung, and today's lanterns' window panes are usually made of glass or plastic.

It's worth pointing out that exceptions to this “portable versus stationary” rule can be found in lanterns that are intentionally designed as permanent lighting fixtures for a space, whether it's to serve as patio lighting outdoors or to illuminate a living room.

There are many types of lighting to consider for your home, and since the days that saw lanterns powered by whale oil, kerosene and later, coal oil, lighting artisans have worked to refine and perfect these innovative fixtures so that they aren’t only practical but also elegant, sophisticated additions to home decor.

Find antique and vintage lamps and other lighting on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A cherished part of Japanese culture, Japanese lanterns symbolize love, brightness and most important of all - protection from evil. Find a collection of expertly vetted Japanese lanterns from some of the world’s top reputable boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A pumpkin lantern is called a jack-o'-lantern. The tradition of carving pumpkins and other vegetables and using them to hold candles dates back to the 19th century when the Irish and Scottish began making the decorations around Halloween to ward off evil spirits. Find a range of antique and vintage lanterns on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Whether or not lanterns can be used outdoors depends on the piece. Ones crafted out of waterproof and rust-proof materials often work indoors and outdoors. Many are only suitable for display in covered outdoor or indoor areas. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of vintage and antique lanterns.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
Chandeliers are called chandeliers because the earliest designs were wooden fixtures that held taper candles. The name comes from the French word for candle, "chandelle." On 1stDibs, find a large collection of antique and vintage chandeliers from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021
Old lanterns are worth $50 to several hundred dollars, on average. The most valuable, which can fetch thousands of dollars, are fixed globe or presentation lanterns.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The various types of Japanese lanterns have different purposes and meanings. Chōchin refers to the traditional paper-covered lanterns which are designed to hang from a hook or pole. Tsuridourou are oil lanterns that hang from the ceiling, and are usually only seen in temples. Ishidourou are made of granite and can be found in gardens and temples, and are only used in special celebrations. You’ll find a collection of Japanese lanterns from many of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022

Add some boho-chic to your décor by shopping a collection of Bohemian chandeliers from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.

Make sure you have plenty of bubble wrap and foam held in place with strong tape. On 1stDibs, you’ll find a collection of antique and contemporary chandeliers from some of the world’s top sellers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
A tole chandelier refers to a type of chandelier that is painted metal, often fashioned to look like greenery and flowers, similar to folk art. Tole chandeliers tend to have a base color of cream, white or gold that seamlessly pairs with a wide range of home décor styles. Shop a selection of vintage and contemporary chandeliers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
The significance of chandeliers is largely a matter of personal opinion. Some people associate them with the history of lighting because they marked a major breakthrough in indoor illumination. Others consider them symbols of wealth and extravagance. On 1stDibs, shop a collection of antique and vintage chandeliers.
  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2019

The weight of a chandelier is dependent on the ceiling’s strength. A concrete ceiling can likely support any size chandelier because of its sturdiness, but a wooden or drywalled ceiling will not be able to support as much weight due to its more fragility.

  • 1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2019

A chandelier is typically suspended from a branching system with multiple lights on the ends, rather than one single light or a pair of lights hanging from a chord or chain.

    1stDibs ExpertAugust 15, 2019

Chandelier lighting is a branched, highly ornamented light fixture that is typically (suspended from) mounted on ceilings lamps.

  • 1stDibs ExpertOctober 19, 2021
A bobeche for chandeliers was designed to catch the wax that dripped from the candles on early fixtures. Today, they are considered to be an accent piece from which the socket, bulb and candle cover rise. Shop a range of antique and vintage chandeliers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
You’ll often see chandeliers with elaborate glass ornamentation serving as a decoration. Quite frequently these glass pendants that hang from the light are called a prism. These pieces add luxe glamour to the light fixture, while also catching illumination and scattering it. Shop iconic vintage and contemporary chandeliers from some of the world’s top boutiques on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
No chandeliers do not have candles but the chandelier evolved from the candelabra, which used candles as their light source. Some chandeliers have light fixtures that are designed to look very much like candles while others have moved in a modern direction and look nothing like their candelabra predecessor. Shop a collection of chandeliers and candelabras from some of the world’s top sellers on 1stDibs.
  • 1stDibs ExpertNovember 2, 2021
An Empire chandelier refers to chandeliers crafted in the Empire style. Empire style furniture resembles Louis XIV furniture in its focus on symmetry — it’s rich with ornamentation and frequently sees an integration of Greek or Roman motifs. An Empire style chandelier will add visual appeal and a sense of grandeur of any room. Shop a range of antique and vintage chandeliers on 1stDibs.
