Doppio filo is a collection of vases made by combining two different colours of filigree rods. The linear, oblique pattern is obtained thanks to a refined glass making technique called “mezza filigrana” invented in Murano in the first half of the 16th century and still used by only a few glass masters in Murano. The complex realisation of these pieces requires the use of long glass rods previously prepared and containing individual coloured glass “threads” in the centre. After being superimposed, intertwined and melted, the rods are wrapped around the molten glass and blown to obtain the desired shape.

The lightness of the mouth-blown glass is accentuated by the glass-working technique used, made pouring into the molten glass a component that reacts and in doing so releases gas bubbles. The collection called ‘Gradienti’ is inspired by the infinite colour nuances of the sky. The technique used to make these vases is called ‘sfumato’, where the goal is to achieve imperceptible transitions between hues of soft colours.
Because of the unpredictable behaviour of the colours during melting and during the hot working pro- cess, every vase is different: sometimes the transition from one colour to another is perfectly smooth, other times you can read a clear transition, a kind of horizon. This unpredictable component is what makes each vase unique.
To make a piece, two colours of molten glass are combined at the beginning of the glass-making process. They are then dipped in an extra thin layer of transparent glass and mouth-blown into a wooden mould. Finally, the opening of the vase is shaped freehand.
After cooling overnight in the kiln, the vases are sandblasted and waxed giving the pieces a satin, smooth and soft surface.

Doppio filo is a collection of vases made by combining two different colours of filigree rods. The linear, oblique pattern is obtained thanks to a refined glass making technique called “mezza filigrana” invented in Murano in the first half of the 16th century and still used by only a few glass masters in Murano. The complex realisation of these pieces requires the use of long glass rods previously prepared and containing individual coloured glass “threads” in the centre. After being superimposed, intertwined and melted, the rods are wrapped around the molten glass and blown to obtain the desired shape.

It is from this famous phrase by Italo Calvino that the design of “ariosi” vases was born. The lightness of the mouth-blown glass is accentuated by the glass-working technique used, made pouring into the molten glass a component that reacts and in doing so releases gas bubbles. The small bubbles enclosed in the glass create an extremely light and “airy” texture. Each piece is shaped freehand, therefore unique.
