Important Cabinet with Two Body in Blackened Wood Carved and Engraved
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
IMPORTANT CABINET WITH TWO BODY IN BLACKENED WOOD CARVED AND ENGRAVED ORIGIN: FRANCE PERIOD: 17TH CENTURY Height: 188 cm Width: 135 cm Depth: 53.5 cm Blackened wood and veneer: rosewood, ebony, pear, mahogany Framed in oak wood A real ceremonial piece of furniture, this two-part cabinet opens with two historiated panels and two drawers in the upper part and two leaves and two belt drawers in the lower part. Richly worked, it offers both inside and outside a floral decoration, finely engraved which contrasts with the importance given to geometric lines. This duality, typical of this type of cabinet, confirms its dating and its origin. In addition, the gilded metal locks and fittings enhance the sumptuous trait of this piece of furniture and also contribute to its ornamentation. Furniture of predilection for “enclosing the most precious things” (Furetière, Dictionnaire, 1690) the appearance of cabinets in the 16th century accompanied the development of wunderkammern, these cabinets of curiosities enriched both by the vogue for the antique and by distant expeditions which bring back with them natural wonders and rare testimonies of distant civilisations. The curious, combining fortune and culture, brings together antique medals, rare plants, fossils, or oriental ornaments. This meeting of pieces which embodies much more than their material reality, a subjective evocation of all the riches of the earth and all the knowledge of men, acts in the eyes of its owner like a microcosm of which he is the master and which he enjoys according to his will. This is how the first cabinets were designed to be transportable, often wooden structures calling for riches only those they housed for a collector who refused to part with them, even temporarily. In the 17th century, the cabinet gained in technical complexity and luxurious materials until it could no longer be moved itself and became a prized and expensive collector’s item...

By Noé Duchaufour-Lawrance
Located in Paris, FR
'Naturoscopie I' is a spectacular design piece that takes its organic inspiration from basic structures found in nature. From the cell to the star and planetary systems, the universe is formed of elements in networks and interconnected materials. The piece’s structure is built in carbon fiber, covered with a specific varnish very soft to the touch. The five shelves are made of honeycomb aluminum upon which the sprayed copper powder gives a matte pink golden effect. "Naturoscopie I" is part of the 'Naturoscopie' collection, exclusively designed in 2012 for Galerie BSL...

Louis XVI Style Cabinet and its Companion Vitrine by F.Linke, France, Circa 1890
By François Linke
Located in PARIS, FR
Exceptional Louis XVI style cabinet and its companion vitrine beautifully mounted with chiseled and gilded bronze. They are surmounted by a rectangular top with an egg-and-dart molded edge, above a frieze centered by a laurel-festooned Bacchic mask and scrolling acanthus. The vitrine and the cabinet open by one door ; the paneled door of the cabinet centered by a ribbon-suspended lyre and foliate pendant. Both have the angles adorned with tapering female caryatids, above a guilloche. They rest on tapering fluted quiver-form legs joined by a pierced stretcher, surmounted by a flowery urn, and ending on toupie feet. Related work : Cabinet and vitrine listed under index 684 of Linke’s photographic archives (see photo attached). View of a room of the private collector Elias Meyer’s Mansion, in 16 Grosvenor Square, London, taken in 1909 and reproduced and commented in François Linke (1855-1946), The Belle Epoque of French Furnitures, Ch. Payne, p.247) showing the cabinet and the showcase in situ. (see photo attached). View of the cabinet in situ in the Queen’s bedroom in the Palace Ras al-Tin, in Alexandria, after being bought by King of Egypt Fouad on March 1927. Reproduced and commented in François Linke (1855-1946), The Belle Epoque of French Furnitures, Ch. Payne, p.278. (see photo attached). François Linke, born in 1855 in Bohemia (Czechoslovakia), worked as a cabinet-maker in Paris from about 1882 until his death in 1946. In 1900, at the apex of his career, he opened a new shop at the famous Parisian place Vendôme. He specialized in Louis XV and Louis XVI style furniture: all pieces were beautifully mounted with gilt-bronze ornaments, and he received numerous commissions. Later Linke decided to collaborate with the well-known sculptor Léon Messagé and integrated new lines and shapes announcing the “Art Nouveau” style. His great success is definitely the 1900 Universal Exhibition where he was awarded the gold medal for his extraordinary kingwood desk, designed by Messagé. At this occasion, the “Revue artistique et industrielle” commented that “Linke’s stand...

"Centro" revolving bookcase, by Claudio Salocchi, Ed. Sormani, Italy, circa 1960
By Luigi Sormani, Claudio Salocchi
Located in Paris, FR
Modular pivoting central bookcase, elements in off-white lacquered wood, central upright in black lacquered metal. Bibliography: Il Soggiorno, coll. Lo dice l’Architetto, Ed. Görlich, Milan, ill. p. 27 G. Gramigna, « Repertorio Del Design Italiano 1950-2000, Per l’Arredamento Domestico, Vol. 1 » Ed. Umberto Allemandi & C, Turin, 2003, model reproduced on p. 82 Biography Claudio Salocchi (March 22, 1934 – December 7, 2012) was an Italian designer and architect. Born in Milan in 1934, he graduated in architecture from the Politecnico di Milano. He taught Building Distribution at Milan’s Politecnico di Milano and Architectural Composition at Rome’s Valle Giulia La Sapienza Faculty. In 1965, he opened his own design studio, and two years later began a long collaboration with Sormani, with whom he exhibited at the Salone Internazionale del Mobile that same year. That year, Salocchi presented the Ellisse collection for Sormani, which became the first company to experiment with extruded aluminum. In 1973, he founded the « Doorty Research Center » with his friends and colleagues Ugo Carrega and Vincenzo Ferrari, with whom he exhibited in 1968 and 1973 at the 14th and 15th Milan Triennales, presenting the film Healthy Objects, Sick objects. In 1979, he won the Compasso d’Oro award for Metrosistema kitchen equipment for homes, produced by Alberti Cucine, also receiving two mentions for two other projects. In 1987, he was again mentioned in the XIV edition of the award. A member of the Association pour les dessins et modèles industriels since 1967, he was vice-president from 1988 to 1990. 4] He has been curator and jury member of various design awards, including the prestigious Red Dot Design Awards in 2004 and 2006. To know more, please click on this Wikipedia link Story Italian furniture pioneer Sormani was founded in 1961 in Arosio by designer Luigi Sormani (1932-2017). The company was an early advocate of modernized production techniques – rejecting the slow, traditional craft techniques and hardwoods so commonly used in the 1950s, in favor of new materials such as Rio rosewood (first imported by Sormani), lacquered wood, then plastic and aluminum in the 1960s and 1970s. Sormani presented its first collection at the Milan Furniture Fair in 1961. This collection, known as Fleeting by Studio ABC, was one of the first modular cabinet systems. In 1966, Sormani began producing thermoformed objects, such as armchair shells, accessories and accent pieces, using molds (a technology derived from the automotive industry which, at the time, was only used for electric household appliances). The Nike and Auriga armchairs by Richard Neagle are prime examples. In the same year, Sormani was the first to experiment with extruded aluminum, with Claudio Salocchi’s Ellisse Collection (1967). During this period, Sormani also established and expanded into the American and Japanese markets, where success was immediate. In 1968, he began a collaboration with architect-designer Gio Ponti, which resulted in a range of colorful storage units. In the early 1970s, Sormani continued to research and analyze the various possibilities offered by new materials. With the creation of an engineering division in the early 1980s, he carried out a number of turnkey projects, operating at all levels of engineering and residential and contract architecture, including the complete restoration and interior decoration of hotels, offices, banks, government buildings, universities, etc. Over the years, Sormani has collaborated with many important Italian designers, including Joe Colombo, Gio Ponti, Carlo De Carli, Claudio Salocchi, Cesare Casati, Emanuele Ponzio, Nani Prina, Antonello Mosca, Fabrizio Cocchia, Gianni Songia, De Pas, D’Urbino, & Lomazzi, Studio A.R.D.I.T.I., Studio ABC (Achilli...
