About the Item
Spring, Bleecker Street, Ruellan's conté crayon drawing from 1938, shows young people out in the world. And their world is Bleecker Street, New York City. The heart of Greenwich Village -- then and still a magical place. The young woman with the umbrella is ready to take it on -- and it occurs to me that this might in fact be a self portrait.
Andrée Ruellan, with her husband, John Taylor, were greatly admired members of the Art Students League and Woodstock, NY, communities. Further, it was Ruellan who had a studio in Paris. Her generous loans enabled many artist friends to spend time in France.
This drawing has the spark and freshness that we admire in Ruellan's work. Sometimes her subjects are darker -- more serious. The human condition is an important theme in her oeuvre. But here there is jois de vivre.
It is signed in pencil in the lower right. A related image is in the collection of the Georgia Museum of Art, Athens.
