About the Item

Portrait of Teacher is an interesting pencil drawing on paper divided into millimeters realized by Anne Charlotte Claudine Rodet. The drawing, presenting the initials “A.R.” on the lower left, is in very good conditions. The paper is applied on a light straw-colored cardboard measuring 24.5 x 17.5 cm. This cardboard presents at the bottom a French inscription in charcoal, only partially readable due to a considerable rip on the lower margin. Another inscription was written in pencil in parentheses with another calligraphy, only partially decipherable, and was probably added after the genesis of the artwork. The cardboard also presents other rips on the higher right part and traces of glue on the back. Anne Charlotte Claudine Rodet was a painter active in Lyons in the 19th century, famous for her paintings on glass and for inventing a new method relating to this technique. The drawing represents an old man, partially bold, wearing glasses and holding a book. Thanks to the few understandable words in the inscriptions, to the type of scholastic paper used for the artwork, to the attire and posture of the portrayed man, we can suppose that this pleasant drawing represents the portrait of a teacher realized in the artist’s youth.

Pencil study portrait drawing of a child painting at an easel by French artist Charles-Jean Agard. The work is signed bottom left and presented in a carved wood and gilt frame with mount under glass. A very charming pencil study of a child sitting at an easel. Agard has beautifully captured the head and face in full, with the light and shade, the rest of the body and surroundings are in sketch form, the contrast between the two making for a very successful composition beautifully capturing the intensity of the sitter.
