About the Item

This charcoal drawing is a preliminary study for the figure of Science, the subject that comprises the far right panel above the entrance to the library at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. The draped male figure holds a compass aloft in his right hand with which he measures the heavens; on the right side of the drawing is a detail of the hand and compass. The murals, commissioned by the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, was a project that consumed Sargent with energy and enthusiasm from 1916 until his death in 1925. A majority of the dozens of charcoal studies remained with the artist until his death and were subsequently distributed to public institutions by his family. A few of them, however, were given by the artist as gifts to friends or individuals who helped him with various aspects of the museum installation. This drawing has been reviewed and accepted by the John Singer Sargent catalogue raisonné committee. Provenance: private collection, to the present Framed Dimensions: 34 x 28 inches
