About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Diana Kan' (American, 1926-2010) and painted circa 1965. Born in Hong Kong, Diana Kan learned the art of calligraphy and painting from her father, Kan Kam-shek, a distinguished calligrapher and, in 1946, became a pupil and disciple of Chang Dai-chien (Zhang Daqian). At the age of nine, she was granted her first solo exhibition at Shanghai's National Academy of Fine Arts. In 1949, Kan moved to New York where she attended the Art Students League and studied with Robert Johnson, Robert B. Hale and Victor Perard. The following year, she went to Paris to attend the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and the Academie de la Grande Chaumiere, where she studied with Paul Lavelle. Kan exhibited widely and with success, including the Royal Academy of Arts in London (1964), the Royal Society of Painters (1964), the Elliott Museum (1967), the Natural History Museum of Taiwan (1971) and the New York Cultural Center (1972). She is the recipient of awards and prizes including from the American Watercolor Society (1968), the Barbara Vassilieff memorial award by the Allied American Artists (1969), the Anna Hyatt Huntington medal (Bronze) and from the Catharine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club. Her works are held in the museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Natural History Museum of Taiwan, St. John's University at Shanghai and in the private collections of figures including Joan Whitney Payson, Sir Winston Churchill and Princess Margaret of England. She was a member of the Salmagundi Club, National Arts Club and Pen and Brush (board member). A dedicated teacher, Diana Kan taught workshops at the National Arts Club for thirty years and lectured at the National Academy of Design in New York and Birmingham Southern College in Alabama.
