Gunter Schulz-Ihlefeldt
'The Harbor at Low Tide', German Modernist Seascape

1950

About the Item

Signed lower right, 'Gunter Schulz-Ilhefeldt' (German, 1912-1966) and dated 1950. An elegant, modernist coastal scene showing a substantial stone-built breakwater at low tide juxtaposing beached boats in rust and jade drawn up on the sandy shore. A student at the Art Academy Berlin-Charlottenburg in Brandenburg and the Städelschule in Frankfurt from 1931-1937, Schulz-Ihlefeldt was a lecturer in anatomy and painting at the Städelschule with his own master studio until his military service began in 1940. A prisoner of war in Russia, Schulz-Ihlefedt recorded his experience through his drawings and watercolors. After the end of military service in 1949 and, returning to a destroyed studio, Schulz-Ihlefeldt worked and lived in Hofeim, where a collection of his work is in the permanent collection of the Hofheim Museum. He turned to abstract painting under the influence of Nachkriegsmoderne in the West and became a representative of the German Informel. Throughout the 1950's, many of Schulz-Ihlefeldt's works were done on paper. Late in life, Schulz-Ihlefeldt returned to teaching, and was appointed assistant professor at the University of Giessen.
