Cloud Lake - Highly Detailed Surreal Landscape, Watercolor & Gouache on Paper
Located in Chicago, IL
Translucent vessels are suspended upon the surface of the water in this surreal landscape entitled "Cloud Lake". This landscape is done in exacting detail with watercolor and gouache down to the smallest water droplet. Layer upon layer of color is added to achieve this impressively detailed painting. The piece is matted and framed in a simple white frame measuring 20.25 x 16.75 inches. Christina Haglid Cloud Lake watercolor and gouache on paper 11h x 8w in 27.94h x 20.32w cm CMH053 Artist's Statement Tiny Sanctuaries There has always been an intersection between the process of writing and the act of painting in my work. It has somehow been my guide. In the last four years, during the making of this work, that connection intensified as I started writing short stories and flash fiction while taking online classes. I find the process of writing and painting so different in almost every way, but there is something freeing and generative in writing which helps my painting process. Or perhaps it's a reminder of what painting is for me - something intuitive that needs to be trusted. And what they do have in common is a desire to encapsulate and distill a single moment, a story, about the complexity of our emotions and experiences. At the heart of my work is the recurring depiction of perseverance, strength of will, and a subtle optimism. Symbolically through the objects, precarious situations depict a moment of possible difficulty, often involving the influence of nature. A paper crane left in the snow. "Andes Mountains Peru South America, " Joseph Yoakum, Black Folk Art Landscape
By Joseph Yoakum
Located in New York, NY
Joseph Yoakum Andes Mountains Peru So America, circa 1960s Colored pencil and ballpoint pen on paper 7 1/4 x 10 1/2 inches Provenance: Karen Lennox Gallery, Chicago Private Collection, South Dakota Yoakum began drawing in the early 1960s. Most of his work consists of radiantly colored landscapes with mountains, water, trees, and winding roads in abstract and complex configurations. his period of greatest activity — 1965 to 1970 — when he usually made one drawing a day. Yoakum maintained he had seen all the places represented in his drawings, a statement that may not be true in some instances. He traveled a great deal, beginning in his early teens when he ran away from home and became a circus handyman. Yoakum’s drawings can be considered memory images growing out of either actual or imagined experiences. All of his drawings have titles that grew longer and more specific over the years. He dated his works with a rubber stamp — an oddly impersonal, labor-saving device. Although Joseph Yoakum gave vastly different accounts of his background, he was, throughout his life, classified as an African American. Sometimes Yoakum claimed that he was a full-blooded “Nava-joe” Indian, one of twelve or thirteen children born to a farmer on an Indian reservation in Window Rock, Arizona. At other times he insisted that he was of African-American descent. He described his mother as a strong woman who was a doctor and knowledgeable in the use of herbal medicines. Yoakum’s family moved to Kansas City, Missouri, during his early childhood. His father was employed briefly in the railroad yards prior to settling permanently on a farm in nearby Walnut Grove...

Canopy, Trees Emerging from a Vase, Botanical Watercolor & Gouache on Paper
Located in Chicago, IL
Tree roots emerge from a vase to create a forest of trees in Christina Haglid's "Canopy". The artist invites the viewer to take a closer look at nature, to question what is seen and to enter into a newly created world. Meticulous in her execution, Haglid uses watercolor as one might use a colored pencil. Layer upon layer of color is added to achieve this impressively detailed painting. VFD 3, watercolor, unframed, Industrial landscape, work on paper, Building
Located in Riverdale, NY
VFD #3 is an industrial watercolor painting on paper by California artist, Ferdinanda Florence. It is 11.25 x 7, unframed. It is based on the building in Vallejo California where the fire department conducts training. Ferdinanda Florence was born in Washington, DC, and grew up in Arlington, VA. She received a degree in art history and studio art at The American University in 1994, and has continued to pursue a successful professional life as a scholar, teacher, and practicing artist. She earned her Master’s degree in art history at the University of Maryland, College Park, in 1998. A second-generation Armenian-America, Ferdinanda has explored in her research the role of place in artistic expression. Her Master’s thesis detailed the link between Armenian religious rituals and church architecture. In her travel to sites in France, Italy, and Germany, she has researched the symbolism of doorway and floor decoration in Romanesque buildings. In her artwork, she uses industrial sites in her home city of Vallejo to explore issues of place on a more personal level. Ferdinanda’s exhibitions reflect her varied interests and concerns. Her work has appeared at the Di Rosa Preserve, Napa (“All in the Family IV,” 2005); the University of San Francisco Law School (“Creative Justice: A Social Art...

The drawings and paintings of David Edward Byrd are legendary. If you were producing a Broadway play or top Rock and Roll concert in the 1970's, David Byrd was the artist you wanted to create the imagery. He created for Broadway the classic art for, Godspell, Follies and Jesus Christ Superstar to mention only a few. For the Rock and Roll industry David created all of the iconic artwork for the Fillmore East including their classic and highly valued posters and programs. The Who's "Tommy" art was David's as was The Rolling Stones 1969 World tour artwork, and the 1969 Jimi Hendrix American concert tour, along with the very first version of the art for the original 1969 Woodstock Music Festival poster...

Gerard Diaz Contemporary French Iris Pencil Drawing
By Gérard Diaz
Located in Roma, IT
This very nice drawing is a view of a romantic garden. In the background, we see a high base topped by a statue of a 19th century figure along with other architectural ruins. Central to the composition is a leafy tree with a leaning trunk. The beautiful flowering iris plant in the foreground gave the drawing its title. The iris has a very long history, as it was known even at the time of the ancient Egyptians and other ancient peoples. It is well documented that in Europe the iris's rhizome was used as a linen perfume. It was named for Iris, the Greek messenger of the gods, who according to Greek mythology, had wings of gold shining with dew, which when lit by the sun rays were decked with all the colors of the rainbow. Also according to this legend, Iris was Juno's favourite goddess because she only bore good news. Juno decided to reward her by turning her into the iris (the rainbow) which was said to be the link between heaven and earth. Born on October 27, 1938, in Mostaganem, Gérard Diaz...

Christina Haglid Blue Thunbergia watercolor on paper 7.25h x 4.50w in 16.75h x 13.75w in framed CMH008 Christina Haglid Artist's Statement I used to write a lot of poetry, and it has shaped the narrative process in my artwork. Now painting has replaced writing. Objects in the painting are considered like words placed on a page. I use flowers, manipulated objects, and architecture together in compositions to symbolize the subtle conversations and interactions between them. They are placed in imaginary landscapes that are inspired by actual places and travels. All the paintings are watercolor and gouache on stonehendge paper, and they are made up almost entirely of individual brushstrokes. Boom, Bust, Repeat - Nick Peña - Contemporary Landscape/Abstract Painting
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
In BOOM BUST REPEAT17, Peña creates a silhouette of house and fills it with sharpe-edged shapes that contain gradients and saturated hues of red, green, and violet. He balances these colors with muted tones of orange and yellow . The viewer can create a house that is yet to be built in between the gaps here. In "Boom, Bust, Repeat", Peña remarks on a house and landscape that has yet to take place. The painting is created with watercolor and acrylic paint on paper. In the foreground we see Sintra board or flattened PVC that has been CNC routed. In the "soil" beneath the house are small circular lines that have been hand drawn with India ink. The Sintra board has been cut to reveal arrows in the negative space pointing upwards as to hint at a boom in the market. Peña’s works range from painting to multimedia installations that question the ever-changing psychological landscape of America; asking the viewer to re-examine their perceptions of the “American Dream” and the affects that pursuit has on our environment and national psyche. The realization that both the idealistic pursuit of happiness and the relevance of painting in a technologically driven world informs his practice. With each composition the labor begins with digital composites of a fragmented American landscape in peril —where tension lies in the contrasts between past and present, analog and digital, representation and abstraction, and stability and instability. In his most recent series the American home (stability) and fragmented and shifting landscape (instability) are veiled by a digitally produced mat. Traditionally a mat is, by definition, a flat, thin piece of paper based material included within the picture frame and serves as additional decoration when framing artwork. He activates this commonly overlooked material by using a non-traditional material, Sintra (flattened sheet of PVC), that has a negative digitally drawn image cut-out. This cut-out might, at first glance, look hand cut however, a more astute viewer would realize the precision is mechanical. The mat has been transformed from inactive decoration to digitally produced veil that represents the technologically anxious precision we surround ourselves with. Nick Peña...
