Very detailed watercolor painting - note how light reflecting off the water surface was skillfully created by scratching the paper surface.
Charles G(J)eorge Nicholls, originally a merchant seaman, was a contemporary of Thomas and William Daniell, and like them, he made several sketching trips whilst in India, including up the Dohab, which is from where this drawing appears to be of.
He worked as draughtsman for the East India Company based in Calcutta and was also employed by the Office of the Surveyor-General, where he was involved in the Survey of Orissa, South Bengal.
Unfortunately bad eyesight truncated his career and he returned to England in 1815.
Nicholls signed his middle name’George’ using a ‘G’, aswell as a ‘J.’
Nicholl’s work surfaces from time to time and can command high prices at auction – especially for his Indian landscapes. For example, a drawing by Nicholls ( a page of an album) was auctioned by Sotheby's (Valuable Printed Books, June 1997, Lot 407), or a series of water coulours were auctioned by Christie's (Visions of India, June 1998) and in September 2000 two small drawings were auctioned again by Christie's (Exploration & Travel with Visions of India). Also, I know there is a unsigned water colour titled 'Bridge over the River Bama by Benares' in the collection of the Oriental & India Office Collections (OICO) at the British Library.
Here is a rare opportunity, to acquire a large format watercolor (double album page), featuring a very impressive view of what India looked like over 200 years ago - seen through the eyes of a skilled artist, in employment by the famous East India Company.
I also think that as India opens up more and more rapidly to the world and enjoys increasing prosperity, the interest in cultural heritage, trophy objects like the one I am offering here today, will find their way back to India, into a collection or onto a wall in a chic office or luxurious apartment.

David Cox (29 April 1783 – 7 June 1859) was an English landscape painter, one of the most important members of the Birmingham School of landscape artists and an early precursor of Impressionism.
He is considered one of the greatest English landscape painters, and a major figure of the Golden age of English watercolour.
Although most popularly known for his works in watercolour, he also painted over 300 works in oil towards the end of his career, now considered "one of the greatest, but least recognised, achievements of any British painter.
His son, known as David Cox the Younger (1809-1885), was also a successful artist.
Early life in Birmingham, 1783–1804

Cox was born on 29 April 1783 on Heath Mill Lane in Deritend, then an industrial suburb of Birmingham. His father was a blacksmith and whitesmith about whom little is known, except that he supplied components such as bayonets and barrels to the Birmingham gun trade. Cox's mother was the daughter of a farmer and miller from Small Heath to the east of Birmingham. Early biographers record that "she had had a better education than his father, and was a woman of superior intelligence and force of character." Cox was initially expected to follow his father into the metal trade and take over his forge, but his lack of physical strength led his family to seek opportunities for him to develop his interest in art, which is said to have first become apparent when the young Cox started painting paper kites...

A master marine painter, Yelland painted in Gloucester Harbor. He sailed to San Francisco in 1874 to take a teaching position in art at Mills College in Oakland. From 1877 to 1894, he taught at the California School of Design. He was a decisive influence on a younger generation of California artists.
Full Bio:
Raymond Dabb Yelland was born in London, England on February 2, 1848. At the age of three, he immigrated with his family to New York City where he was raised and attended public schools. By the age of twelve, he had settled on art as a career.
He was born as Raymond Dabb, but due to the negative connotation of his name, his mother's maiden name, Yelland, was added. After serving under Sheridan in the Federal Army during the Civil War, Yelland attended Pennington Seminary in New Jersey. He studied art at the National Academy of Design from 1869 to 1871 with Page and Brevoort, and then taught at the Academy for one year.
With his new bride, he sailed around the Horn in 1874 to San Francisco where he would assume the position of an art instructor at Mills College in Oakland. In 1877, he traveled to England, and later continued his studies in Paris with Luc Oliver Merson. Upon his return to California, Yelland became assistant director of the San Francisco School of Design, and in 1888, assumed its directorship. Late 19th century delicate watercolor of the harbor at Cape Ann, Gloucester, Massachusetts depicting rocks in the calm water along with seagulls and sailboats in the distance, by 19th century artist and Reverend William George Puddefoot (American, 1842-1925). Signed "W.G. Puddefoot" lower left. Titled on verso, "Cape Ann Scenery / Near Gloucester, Sunset". Presented in a carved giltwood frame and off-white mat.
Reverend William George Puddefoot [1842-1925] (also known as W C Puddefoot) was an artist, traveler, lecturer and the field secretary for the American Home Missionary Society [1826-1893]. For his work, Puddefoot traveled all over the US, lecturing and doing missionary work, including: Iowa, Minnesota, Indiana Pennsylvania, California and Connecticut. He was known for being an extremely colorful character especially in his sermons and lectures. Puddefoot wrote the book Minute Man...
