A Fishing Boat at Sea, Late Mid-Century Gouache on Paper

French gouache on paper of a boat travelling the seas. The work is unsigned but dated 22/11/70. Presented in simple gilt frame with handcut mount.
A really engaging and powerful painting. The artist has managed to capture the swell of the sea, the movement of the boat listing gently to one side, the slightly rusty hull, the moody sky filled with all the seagulls following behind, which suggests it might be a fishing boat. They have used a limited but strong colour palette, blues, blacks and greys and then just to highlight and catch the eye a splash of green to represent the starboard or right bow light.

David Wang is a native of Beijing, China. He gained his education from the Beijing Education College of China in 1984, where he learned various techniques in drawing, watercolor, oil painting, sculpture, graphic design, and Chinese watercolor. After receiving his Bachelor of Arts Degree, he became a fine arts teacher. During his eight years of teaching, he has taught hundreds of quality students, some becoming professional artists and cinematographers. Wang has also accomplished several major art and design projects, such as designing and creating an exhibit of the Terra-Cotta army warriors in the Forbidden City and interior designs for shopping plazas in Beijing.
In 1988, David came to the U.S as a visitor scholar and studied at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles. After his studies in 1992, he continued his profession as a full-time artist. Louis Macouillard was born in San Francisco, CA on Sept. 8, 1913 of French descent and first graduated from Polytechnic High School and the CCAC (1934) before further study at the Art Students League in NYC. Returning to San Francisco, he became art director for the Velvetone Poster Company and maintained a studio on Hotaling Place. He began painting scenes of San Francisco in watercolor during the 1930's and also worked in mosaics and as a muralist. He exhibited with success including at the Oakland Art Gallery (later the Oakland Museum) 1934, and at the San Francisco Art Association (1935). Om Prakash Sharma (born 14 December 1932) is an Indian painter, visual artist, professor, writer and sitarist based in New Delhi, India. He was bestowed with National Award for Painting of Lalit Kala Akademi in 1969, by the President of India. Sharma has won All India Fine Arts and Crafts Society's Annual Art Exhibitions thrice in 1966, 1967 and 1969, and has been awarded with multiple awards at various state exhibitions.
Sharma was born in 1932, in Bawal, Haryana. He attended Meerut College where he graduated in drawing and paintings in 1951. Sharma earned The National Diploma in Fine Arts in 1958 from Delhi Polytechnic with First Class and Distinction. Wayne Ensrud was born in Minnesota where he received his BFA from the Minneapolis Institute of Art. As a student he met Oskar Kokoschka, the artist-in-residence at the Institute, who profoundly influenced Ensrud's work and has remained his friend and mentor ever since.
When Pablo Casals conducted his Master Class Series at Berkeley. Wayne Ensrud had the honor ot being invited to execute drawings of the great cellist during those sessions. and this year when the New York Chamber Society celebrated its 10th anniversary.Ensrud was asked to sit in on rehearsals and sketch the world famous violinists ltzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman. Actress Jayne Mansfield, novelist Alex Waugh, wine connoisseur Alexis Lichine are among others who have been portrayed by Ensrud.
Mr. Ensrud has been a free-lance art director and animator for ABC, CBS, and IRM IBM contracted him to he the series, "Computer and the Mind of Man", which has been translated into 18 languages and won several international awards. For ABC he created the film animations for the Gemini Space Programs. He taught film animation at Pratt Institute for tour years. Ensrud was Art Director at the University of California at Berkeley for the Department of Motion Pictures and Television and he was Executive Art Director of Channel 13-TV, New York City.
