Note: Max Leon Moreau (1902 - 1992)
Moreau is a highly acclaimed artist born in Belgium. He is best known for his loosely brushed street scenes of Paris, Granada, and North Africa and his revealing portraits of met characters during his foreign travels. Taught to paint by his father, the family moved to Paris, where he made copies of paintings at the Louvre Museum. Later Moreau and his family lived in Tunisia and Morocco before settling in Granada, Spain. Following his death in 1992, his home was converted into a museum dedicated to his life and work. His paintings are internationally collected and appear at auction in major international houses.
Max spent his last 30 years living in his Moorish-style house in Granada, which upon his death, was bequeathed to the City of Granada along with the contents of his studio and artwork.

The main building of the Casa Museo Max Moreau houses an exhibition space that takes us on a journey through his most common themes: portraits, still-life, and landscapes, represented through oil paintings, watercolors, and drawings on paper. There is also a series of models for theatre creations that illustrate his interest and relationship to the scenic arts (he was involved in many productions as an actor, playwright, musician, and set designer).
The building is an original from the region of Albayzín and is popularly known as Carmen. Charles James Turrell was one of the most talented miniaturists of his age. Born in London, he studied under a Mr. Sargeant, perhaps Frederick Sargeant who exhibited at the Royal Academy, before visiting the United States in 1867 where he painted miniatures at the studio of photographer Napoleon Sarony. During this time, Turrell had distinguished sitters including members of the Vanderbilt, Whitney, and Morgan families. While in America, Turrell married and would go on to maintain successful careers in both New York and London where, in 1869, he opened a studio on Bond Street.
Turrell exhibited widely and with success including annually at the Royal Academy (1873-1904), the Society of Miniaturists (1873 – 1932), the Brooklyn Art Association (1868), the Pennsylvania Academy of Art (1901) and at the Paris Salons. His sitters included Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, and Queen Alexandra, when she was Princess of Wales (1884). In 1890, he was appointed official miniature painter to Queen Victoria. Turrell's work is held in the Royal Collection at Buckingham Palace as well as in the permanent collections of New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, London's Victoria & Albert Museum and the Mount Vernon Collection in Washington D.C., among others.

Daniel Saint was a prominent French miniaturist who lived between 1778 and 1847. Born in Paris, Saint was the son of a jeweler and initially began his career as an apprentice in his father's workshop. However, he soon discovered his passion for painting and turned his attention to miniatures, which were highly popular in 18th and 19th-century Europe.
Saint was a highly skilled artist and quickly gained a reputation for his miniature portraits, which were characterized by their delicate detail and fine brushwork. His works often featured prominent figures from French society, including members of the royal family and high-ranking officials. He also painted portraits of wealthy patrons, many of whom commissioned him to create highly personalized works.
Saint's style was highly influenced by the neoclassical movement, which emphasized clarity, simplicity, and rationality. He often used a limited color palette, focusing on soft pastels and muted tones, which helped to accentuate the delicate features of his subjects. His compositions were typically centered around the face, with little background or context to distract from the subject.
Despite his success as a miniaturist, Saint was not immune to the changing tastes of the art world. Stonehouse had an extraordinary life. As a young art student studying fashion illustration, he joined the Royal Artillery at the beginning of WWII but soon became a part of the Special Operations Executive (SOE). He was sent to France as a radio operator but three and a half months later was caught by the Gestapo, tortured, given a death sentence and then selected for slave labour. He spent the subsequent war years in three French prisons and five concentration and labour camps, including Dachau. He still managed to continue to draw in some of the camps. Following the war, Stonehouse went to the US and continued his career as a fashion artist painting for magazines...

Signed lower right, 'Ruth Peabody' for Ruth Eaton Colburn Peabody (American, 1893-1966) and painted circa 1955.
Born in Highland Park, Illinois, Ruth Peabody was taught to paint as a child by her mother, artist Elanor Colburn, and first studied sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago. The two women moved to Laguna Beach, California, in 1924, and became active in the local art scene. At their studio, Peabody sculpted fountains and memorial plaques when not teaching, privately and at Laguna Beach High School.
Over the course of a long career, Ruth Peabody exhibited widely and with success including at the Panama Pacific Exhibition (1915), Art Institute of Chicago, Oakland Art Gallery (1932)and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (1931) and was the recipient of numerous prizes, medals and juried awards. In 1939, the Fine Arts Gallery of San Diego presented Peabody's abstract works in a solo exhibition, the first show of its kind by a regional artist. Her work is held in private and public collections including the San Diego Museum and Orange County Museum.
