Lowell Nesbitt Biography:
Lowell Blair Nesbitt, painter, printmaker, draughtsman, and sculptor, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on 4 October 1933. He studied at Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
Nesbitt worked in abstraction until Robert Indiana suggested in the early 1960s that he explore realism in his paintings. As subjects for his work he favored studio interiors, articles of clothing, piles of shoes, his Rottweiler, the Neo-Classical facades of 19th century cast iron buildings, and Manhattan's bridges. He was also famous for his enormous paintings and prints of roses, lilies, irises, and other flowers. In 1980, the United States Post Office issued...

The Carnations, Late 19th Century Botanical Watercolour
Located in Cotignac, FR
A late 19th Century botanical watercolour and gouache of carnations growing in a pot by German born artist Kathi (Ketty) Gilsoul-Hoppe. The painting is signed and dated bottom left and presented under glass in gilded wood frame.
A charming composition of carnations (dianthus) growing in a terracotta pot, straight from the greenhouse. Hoppe has managed to capture the floral abandon as the flowers reach for the sky and away from the confinement of their pot. Nice use of shade and a subtle colour palette. This type of botanical art was extremely popular with female artists of the late 19th century and Hoppe was one if it's well known exponents.
Though born in Dusseldorf, Germany, from 1872 Hoppe spent most of her life and career in Belgium. Her father, was Édouard Hoppe, himself a former student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Düsseldorf and her sister Jenny was also an artist. Kathi learnt her artistic skills thanks to her father, who was also a noted engraver. Her later teachers were Henri Hendrickx, Édouard Tourteau, at the professional school of Brussels, and Jean-François Portaels.
She married the Belgian Impressionist artist Victor Gilsoul...
