Unique, poignant, exquisitely rendered graphite drawing on watercolor paper with deckled edges. This work is framed and ready to hang; frame bears Alan Brown Gallery (Hartsdale) label verso. It was acquired from the Estate of Noel Frackman, renowned art historian, scholar, writer, and professor with a lifelong passion for 20th Century Art - and a close personal friend of Lowell Nesbitt. She earned a M.A. from Sarah Lawrence College in English Literature and a M.A. and Ph.D. in Art History from the Institute of Fine Arts of New York University. She was an art critic for the Patent Trader Newspaper and the Scarsdale Inquirer, contributing editor for Arts Magazine, author of numerous catalogs including ''John Storrs'', for the Whitney Museum of American Art. For 19 years she was a faculty member at Purchase College, State University of New York.

Lowell Nesbitt Biography:
Lowell Blair Nesbitt, painter, printmaker, draughtsman, and sculptor, was born in Baltimore, Maryland on 4 October 1933. He studied at Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia and at the Royal Academy of Arts in London.
Nesbitt worked in abstraction until Robert Indiana suggested in the early 1960s that he explore realism in his paintings. As subjects for his work he favored studio interiors, articles of clothing, piles of shoes, his Rottweiler, the Neo-Classical facades of 19th century cast iron buildings, and Manhattan's bridges. He was also famous for his enormous paintings and prints of roses, lilies, irises, and other flowers. In 1980, the United States Post Office issued four stamps depicting Nesbitt's large floral paintings. He was also the official artist for NASA's space flights Apollo 9 and Apollo 13.
His first solo exhibition was mounted at the Baltimore Museum of Art in 1958 and during his lifetime he had more than 130 solo exhibitions of his work at various galleries, museums, and universities, including the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Kent State University, the McNay Art Museum, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Burpee Art Museum, and the Tyler Gallery at Temple University.
His works are represented in many corporate collections and public collections holding his work include but are not limited to the Art Institute of Chicago, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Butler Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Dallas Museum of Art, the Fogg Art Museum, the High Museum of Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, the Library of Congress, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the Museum of Modern Art New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Phillips Collection, the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Worcester Art Museum, and the Yale University Art Gallery.
In 1976, Nesbitt purchased property located at 389 West 12th Street in New York. The building, once a police stable, was completely renovated into a studio and living space, complete with an indoor swimming pool and atrium, and a rooftop entertainment area. After his death, "The Old Stable," as he referred to his house and studio, was purchased by fashion designer, Diane von Furstenberg.
Lowell Nesbitt died in Manhattan on 8 July 1993.

Lowell Nesbitt
Lowell Nesbitt was one of the most celebrated and noted artists for his floral works of art. An artist with a highly personal style, he made realistic studies of many themes throughout his career. His most well-known series, and perhaps his most beautiful and poetic, are the more than four hundred works he created using the flower as a theme. Beginning with his first show in 1957, Nesbitt had more than 80 one-man shows. His painting, drawings and prints are included in the collections of many prestigious museums such as the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Art in New York and the National Gallery of Fine Art in Washington, D.C.

Graphite, ink wash and watercolor on handmade laid paper with a large, indistinguishable ovoid watermark with a bunch of grapes, 8 7/16 x 12 5/8 inches (225 x 320 mm), signed in brown ink in the lower left. With the Henry Scipio Reitlinger oval stamp in brown ink on the verso (Lugt 2274a).
The condition of the image and paper is consistent with age, there is minor toning on the recto and some attenuation of the green pigment. The drawing is laid down to an 18th century laid paper support and has a small pencil notation in the lower right corner (modern), and scattered notations in pencil on the verso of the support (also modern, perhaps auction/accession notes). On the paper support is an ink drawing in red and black of what appears to be the floor plan for the wing of a large building. The drawing is top-up, adhered facing the verso of the drawing. The architectural drawing on the support is visible through to the recto of the composition when the sheets are viewed through raking light. There is a small area of stipple point spotting in brown ink on the verso of the support. Examination under black light shows no indication of repairs or additions, expert or otherwise.
