About the Item

John Chamberlain Untitled, 1960 Printed paper, staples, and mixed media on board 7 1/8 x 7 3/4 inches Provenance The artist Gifted by the artist, circa 1960's Private Collection, New York Hal Katzen Gallery, New York Private Collection, New York c. 2024 John Chamberlain was born 1927 in Rochester, Indiana. He was raised in Chicago and, following his service in the navy from 1943 to 1946, enrolled at the Art Institute of Chicago from 1950 to 1952. It was during this period that he began crafting welded steel sculptures, drawing inspiration from David Smith's artistry. In 1955 and 1956, Chamberlain both studied and taught sculpture at Black Mountain College, located near Asheville, North Carolina, where many of his companions were poets, including Robert Creeley, Robert Duncan, and Charles Olson. By 1958, he started to integrate scrap metal from automobiles into his creations, and from 1959 onward, he focused on sculptures constructed entirely from welded crushed car parts. His debut significant solo exhibition took place at the Martha Jackson Gallery in New York in 1960. Chamberlain's artistry garnered critical recognition in the early 1960s, establishing him as a pivotal figure in three-dimensional Abstract Expressionism. His sculptures were part of The Art of Assemblage, held at the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1961, the same year he showcased his work at the São Paulo Biennial. Beginning in 1962, he frequently exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York, and in 1964, his creations were displayed at the Venice Biennale. While he maintained his focus on sculptures made from auto parts, Chamberlain also ventured into other mediums. Between 1963 and 1965, he created geometric paintings using sprayed automobile paint. In 1966, the year he received his first of two fellowships from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, he initiated a series of sculptures using urethane foam, which he manipulated through rolling, folding, cutting, and tying. He then applied techniques of crushing and compressing to galvanized steel and paper bags, followed in 1970 by sculptures made of heat-crumpled Plexiglas. During this time, he also produced the film The Secret Life of Hernando Cortez in 1968, featuring Andy Warhol's superstars Taylor Mead and Ultra Violet. Chamberlain's work was featured in a retrospective at the Guggenheim Museum in New York in 1971, showcasing small pieces of his latest exploration with aluminum foil for the first time. In 1972, Chamberlain resumed creating large-scale pieces utilizing automobile components. Until the mid-1970s, he crafted these auto sculptures on the property of collector Stanley Marsh in Amarillo, Texas. From 1977 onward, Chamberlain delved into photography using a panoramic Widelux camera. His next significant retrospective took place at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles in 1986, accompanied by the publication of John Chamberlain: A Catalogue Raisonné of the Sculpture 1954–1985. He has been the recipient of various accolades for his artistic contributions, such as the Skowhegan Medal for Sculpture and the Lifetime Achievement Award in Contemporary Sculpture from the International Sculpture Center, Washington, D. C. (both awarded in 1993); the Gold Medal from the National Arts Club, New York (1997); and the Distinction in Sculpture from the Sculpture Center, New York (1999). During the final decade of his life, Chamberlain broadened his artistic repertoire by exploring a new medium: large-format photographs printed on canvas, enhanced with digital effects, segmented into regular vertical strips, and collaged to form new works. In 2007, he began producing a new series that transformed his small-scale foil sculptures from the mid-1980s into monumental pieces. Additionally, he gathered a collection of vintage cars, extracting materials for his final sculptures—bold and grand in their size, reflecting the evolution of his early explorations in abstraction, form, and composition. Chamberlain passed away on December 21, 2011, in New York.
