Le Diable à Paris - Rare Book Illustrated by Paul Gavarni - 1869
Located in Roma, IT
Le Diable à Paris is an original modern rare book written by Various Authors and illustrated by Paul Gavarni (1804 – 1866) and by Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard (Nancy, 1803 – Vances, 1847) in 1869. Original First Edition. Published by Hetzel & Cie, Paris. Format: 4°. The book includes 816 pages in 4 volumes. Hundreds of lithographs (several are full page Lithographs). Very good conditions. Paul Gavarni (1804 – 1866) and by Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard (Nancy, 1803 – Vances, 1847). Paul Gavarni was the nom de plume of Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier (1804 – 1866), a French illustrator, born in Paris. Among his illustrated works were Les Lorettes, Les Actrices, Les Coulisses, Les Fasizionables, Les Gentilshommes bourgeois, Les Artistes, Les Débardeurs, Clichy, Les Étudiants de Paris, Les Baliverneries parisiennes, Les Plaisirs champêtres, Les Bals masqués, Le Carnaval, Les Souvenirs du carnaval, Les Souvenirs du bal Chicard, La Vie des jeunes hommes, and Les Patois de Paris. He had now ceased to be director of Les Gens du monde; but he was engaged as ordinary caricaturist of Le Charivari, and, while making the fortune of the paper, he made his own. His name was exceedingly popular, and his illustrations for books were eagerly sought for by publishers. Le Juif errant, by Eugene Sue (1843, 4 vols. 8vo), the French translation of Hoffman's tales (1843, 8 vo), the first collective edition of Balzac's works (Paris, Houssiaux, 1850, 20 vols. 8 vo), Le Diable à Paris (1844–1846, 2 vols. 4 vo), Les Français peints par eux-mêmes (1840–1843, 9 vols. 8vo), the collection of Physiologies published by Aubert in 38 vols. 18mo (1840–1842), all owed a great part of their success at the time, and are still sought for, on account of the clever and telling sketches contributed by Gavarni. Jean Ignace Isidore Gérard (Nancy, 1803 – Vanves, 1847), generally known by the pseudonym of Jean-Jacques, J. J. Grandville or most commonly simply Grandville, was a French caricaturist. Grandville's ability for political provocation made his work much in demand. He worked in a wide variety of formats, from his first job illustrating the parlor game Old Maid, to illustrated newspaper strips of which he was a master. His illustrations for Le Diable à Paris ("The Devil In Paris"; 1844–46) were used by Walter Benjamin for his study of that city as an urban organism. One of Grandville's supreme achievements, at a time when French printing technology was ascendant, was Les Fleurs Animées, a series of images that are both poetic and satirical. But perhaps his most original contribution to the illustrated book form was Un Autre Monde, which approaches the status of pure...

A Pair of Pastels -Hebe and Ganymede
Located in London, GB
Attributed to Johann Heinrich Schröder (1757-1812) Hebe and Ganymede circa1800 A pair of pastels on paper; held in ebonised frames The German artist, Johann Heinrich Schröder was born in Meining in 1757 and studied at the Academy of Painting and Sculpture in Kassel under Johann Heinrich-Tischbein (1722-1789). He undertook study tours to England and the Netherlands where he portrayed members of the royal families and on his return to Germany was quickly employed by various courts, becoming the favoured royal portraitist of the Duke of Brunswick. He worked mainly in pastels – producing lively, colourful images – and was the best German artist of his time using this technique. Though not typical for the artist, these mythological figurative works exhibit very similar qualities that make it likely that they are by him, or at the very least, an extremely talented colleague working closely in his circle. Many slightly different versions of the classical myth exist but in essence the pastels simply depict both Hebe and Ganymede as cup-bearers to the Gods: Hebe, the daughter of Juno, and goddess of youth, vacated this position on becoming the wife of Hercules or possibly was dismissed as a consequence of a fall she met with when in attendance on the gods. Her successor was Ganymede, a Trojan boy, whom Jupiter, in the disguise of an eagle, seized and carried off from the midst of his play-fellows on Mount...

'Map of Milwaukee' color lithograph published by George F. Cram of Chicago
Located in Milwaukee, WI
This is an original color lithograph map of the City of Milwaukee, published in 1895 by the Chicago mapmaker George Franklin Cram. It provides an excellent historic view of the city during the late nineteenth century, highlighting major neighborhoods, parks, companies and other historic landmarks. 20 x 13.5 inches, map 30.63 x 24.13 inches, frame Inscribed lower left "Map of Milwaukee; Published by George F. Cram; 61-63 Plymouth Place, Chicago" Framed to conservation standards using 100 percent rag silk-lined matting with a 1/4 inch bevel and museum glass, housed in a gold and bol metal gilded moulding. The George F. Cram Company traces its ancestry back to 1867, when a merchant named Rufus Blanchard, originally from Massachusetts, took his nephew George F. Cram into business with him in Evanston, Illinois, near Chicago. Prior to that, back East, Blanchard had prospered through the sale of globes, maps, and books, but after the Civil War had moved to the Midwest. He brought Cram into the trade as a partner. Cram, who was born on May 20, 1842, was fairly young at the time. He had served in the Union Army during the Civil War, and, reportedly, had a role as a cartographer for General Ulysses S. Grant. He also wrote several letters while serving under General William T. Sherman and participating in that military commander's celebrated "march to the sea." Years later, Cram's biography and letters would command enough historical interest to find their way into print. The company of the uncle and nephew, which sold maps and atlases...

An Alphabet of Capital Letters: Selected from the Illuminations of Italian Chorale Books of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries. Arundel Society. London, 1862. Engraving. Printed in Colours. Hand-Painted Gold Highlights. To produce a study for an historic illumination of antiphonals, the Arundel Society selected each of the alphabet letters from chorale books created in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Devotional pieces, the chorale music was greatly appreciated by Christians throughout the world. Often it was sung as responsive music where the choir would be divided into two parts thus creating a harmony which reinforced the Christian religious doctrine. As illustrious as the music, the key letters that headed each piece would take their own place in the art world. Many initials would be specifically devoted to prominent men and woman of both religious and cultural importance. For example, the “F” was devoted to Fra Angelico, an Italian painter of the Early Renaissance, described by Vasari in his Lives of the Artists...
