About the Item

Suite Montagnarde is an original modern rare book illustrated by Raoul Dufy (Le Havre, 1877 – Forcalquier, 1953) with original woodcuts and written by Pierre Courthion (1902-1988).. Published by Editions Lumière, Antwerpen, in 1932. Original Edition. 55 numbered copies. Format: 8°. The book includes 68 pages with six full page lithographs. Mint conditions. Raoul Dufy (Le Havre, 1877 – Forcalquier, 1953) was a French Fauvist painter, brother of Jean Dufy. He developed a colorful, decorative style that became fashionable for designs of ceramics and textiles, as well as decorative schemes for public buildings. He is noted for scenes of open-air social events. He was also a draftsman, printmaker, book illustrator, scenic designer, a designer of furniture, and a planner of public spaces. Pierre Courthion (1902-1988). Pierre Courthion (1902-1988) was a Swiss art critic and historian. Courthion was educated at the University of Geneva and was awarded a scholarship to study painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris.[1] At the Louvre, he did his doctorate on the painter, Jean-Étienne Liotard. In 1941, Courthion interviewed Henri Matisse, but after months of difficult negotiations, Matisse refused to have the resulting book published, just a few weeks before it was due to come out. The "lost" interview was not published until 2013. His papers are held at the Getty Research Institute in Los Angeles, California.
