About the Item
In Eternal Streams Meet color, line, shape, and texture collide with handwritten romantic fragments of prose on Kozuke ivory paper. This one-of-a-kind, unmounted encaustic monotype illuminates a poetic interior landscape. The softness of the washi paper juxtaposed with the lush, textured encaustic/mixed media bring a sense of fragility and lightness to the artwork.
Process:
Alena's artistic approach is intuitive and inductive and often starts with a contemplative method (durational viewing and/or interaction with nature), followed by expressive mark-making with India ink on washi paper. She often works with a limited soft, muted color palette of encaustic paints and uses an iterative and gestural approach to apply the media. The final phases of creation often include additional intuitive mark-making, subtle line work and hand-written excerpts from literature from the Romantic period.
Washi Paper:
The texture and slight distress in select areas near certain media application is intentional and intended to be part of the overall aesthetic.
Shipping:
The artwork will be rolled, shipped in a tube, and take approximately 5 business days. For shorter delivery timelines please message me directly to make arrangements.
Matte and Frame Ideas
- Float frames (glass/no glass over the monotype)
- Spacers in float frames/when glass is against the print are recommended for conservation purposes
- Traditional frames with or without a matte
- When framing the monotype a light ivory or white matte board illuminates the colors

All artworks are signed on the back in pencil and include the title, creation year, and my signature. A certificate of authenticity is also included with the artwork.

Alena Ahrens’ studio practice is influenced by her cross-cultural upbringing, training in mindfulness, and fieldwork in painting and modern dance. Her transition into a studio practice began when early field and course work in the fields of psychology and performance led to training with Marina Abramović at MoMA PS1 (Summer, 2012). Alena has trained with Marina Abramović at MoMA PS1 (Summer, 2012) and has completed performance residency work with Mark Jeffery, Lin Hixson, and Matthew Goulish. Additional self-study led her to pursuing an MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where she expanded her performance practice to include visual and sculptural works. Alena has presented work at the Zhou B. Art Center (Chicago, IL), the Tipi Project (Brooklyn, NY), the Bruno David Projects (St. Louis), MoMA PS1 (NYC), and the DAMU Theatre (Prague, Czech Republic). She will be an artist in residence at Hangar (Portugal) in the Winter - 2023.

Artist Statement:
“As an artist, I find endless possibilities overwhelming and use self-imposed boundaries to focus my work. This often includes some combination of: a literal grid or graphite border, employment of barbecue skewers or wooden chopsticks in lieu of paintbrushes for mark making, use of a monochromatic or limited color palette, and a reliance on shape and pattern to tell a story. Limiting the elements at play adds a measure of gravity to each decision, and every detail about the paper, the viscosity of the paint, micro variations in hues, and even the sharpness of the point on a skewer matters.
I’ve found that the more restrictions I put in place when I paint, the freer my work has become, allowing a tension to form between the organic and prescribed. Rather than sketch before starting a new piece, I spend time with the paper and begin to visualize possibilities. From there, I can expand the work incrementally. Whether I’m working in an adapted form of pointillism, playing with opacity and hue, or building patterns through repeating shape, the work evolves in its own time. It is an intentionally open process of discovery that seeks to uncover the greatest potential of the basest elements we have at our disposal”. - Kate Snow
