About the Item
In Just Remember That My Happiness Depends On Yours color, line, shape, and texture collide on Kozuke ivory paper. This one-of-a-kind, unmounted encaustic monotype illuminates a poetic interior landscape. The softness of the washi paper juxtaposed with the lush, textured encaustic/mixed media bring a sense of fragility and lightness to the artwork.
Process:
Alena's artistic approach is intuitive and inductive, beginning with a contemplative method (durational viewing and/or interaction with nature), followed by expressive mark-making with India ink on rice paper. She often works with a limited soft, muted color palette of encaustic paints and uses an iterative and gestural approach to apply the media. The final phases of creation include additional intuitive mark-making, subtle line work and hand-written excerpts from literature from the Romantic period.
Washi Paper:
The texture and slight distress in select areas near certain media application is intentional and intended to be part of the overall aesthetic.
Shipping:
The artwork will be rolled, shipped in a tube, and take approximately 5 business days. For shorter delivery timelines please message me directly to make arrangements.
Matte and Frame Ideas:
Float frames (glass/no glass over the monotype; glass will "flatten" the monotype)
Traditional frames with or without a matte
When framing the monotype a light ivory or white matte board illuminates the colors.

Signature and Certificate
All artworks are signed on the back in pencil and include the title, creation year, and my signature. A certificate of authenticity is also included with the artwork.

Alena Ahrens’ studio practice is influenced by her cross-cultural upbringing, training in mindfulness, and fieldwork in painting and modern dance. Her transition into a studio practice began when early field and course work in the fields of psychology and performance led to training with Marina Abramović at MoMA PS1 (Summer, 2012). Alena has trained with Marina Abramović at MoMA PS1 (Summer, 2012) and has completed performance residency work with Mark Jeffery, Lin Hixson, and Matthew Goulish. Additional self-study led her to pursuing an MFA at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC) where she expanded her performance practice to include visual and sculptural works. Alena has presented work at the Zhou B. Art Center (Chicago, IL), the Tipi Project (Brooklyn, NY), the Bruno David Projects (St. Louis), MoMA PS1 (NYC), and the DAMU Theatre (Prague, Czech Republic). She will be an artist in residence at Hangar (Portugal) in the Winter - 2023.
