About the Item

Amaranth Ehrenhalt (1928-2021) Untitled, 1966 Acrylic on canvas 38 x 51 3/4 in. 96.5 x 131.4 cm Signed and dated lower left Exposition: '9 Women, 20th Century', Nagas, New York, September 3 - October 25, 2025 Bibliography: '9 Women, 20th Century', published by Nagas, reproduced on page 35 By 1966, Amaranth Ehrenhalt had firmly established herself in Paris, part of a generation of American expatriate artists who sought new artistic exploration abroad. Her work from this period retained the gestural energy and bold color of Abstract Expressionism, while beginning to open toward looser spatial structures and a suggestive, near-figurative quality. In 1962, poet and critic John Ashbery singled out her painting for special praise, writing that it was “both an excellent example of New York School abstraction (lush colors, fluent brush work, bustling composition) and an attempt at a new, possibly eerie form of figuration... always on the point of resolving itself into landscape or a portrait.” The painting shown here, created in 1966 and exhibited that same year at the Galerie Zunini in Paris, reflects this moment of experimentation. Its vivid planes of color and sweeping brushwork capture the dynamism of Ehrenhalt’s Paris years, when she worked alongside artists such as Sonia Delaunay, Sam Francis and Joan Mitchell, finding in the city a welcoming space for exchange and innovation. This canvas marks a moment when Ehrenhalt, though deeply rooted in the language of the New York School, was forging a personal approach that blurred the boundaries between pure abstraction and evocations of lived experience. -- Amaranth Ehrenhalt was an American painter, printmaker, and writer associated with Abstract Expressionism. Born in Newark, New Jersey, she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and at the Art Students League of New York. In the early 1950s, she became part of the vibrant New York art scene, meeting artists such as Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, whose influence shaped her interest in gestural abstraction. Later in the 1950s, Ehrenhalt moved to Paris, where she joined a circle of American expatriate artists that included Joan Mitchell, Shirley Jaffe, and Sam Francis. Her paintings are marked by energetic brushstrokes, bold color palettes, and improvisational rhythms, often conveying a lyrical approach to abstraction. Despite financial hardships, she maintained an active and prolific practice, exhibiting regularly in both France and the United States while also producing works on paper, prints, and poetry.
