A study of the site and geographic area / archives left behind, what is preserved and an artist's expressive perception of events over time..
Herculaneum was nearer the coastline in Roman times , before Modern Napoli expansion.. Gradwell's work doesn't always attempt to be 'pretty' , Tensions and antagonism also his spell. This piece was painted after experiencing an exclusive 'Night Hours' tour of the site by ' candle ' /torchlight.. The surfaces , the faces , the structures, the light and dark. The ingrained tricks of light and surface appeal to me.. Gradwell: 'My paintings are not a backdrop , they exhist to entre each space in time and for thoughs that feel subtlety and gestures that are meaningful.. A hymnn/ meditation to where we are in relative time. Natural disasters are different to Human inflicted disasters . The 'slow burn', of life in some ways. Archetypal rememberance of the best forms are individual minds produce in this Ether, traces of what is left behind in a concentrated space beyond human levelling a space. . A sense of the irredeemable human experience. Mapping the Ethereal, beyond Nostgalic feelings. ' Painted en plien aire on site circa 2005.
