Contemporary Abstract Painting of grid in pastel blue, grey, white, green and pink
"When the World is a Monster" painted by Hudson Valley, NY based painter, Anthony Finta, in 2020
40 x 30 inches oil, enamel and paper collage on canvas
41 x 31 x 1.5 inches framed in custom light wood Larson Juhl floater frame
Signed, verso
Excellent condition and ready to hang
Freeing points of reference from literal interpretation, Anthony Finta breaks down forms into grids of color that range from complementary pastel tones to vivid, nearly raw pigments - drawing each composition that is often altered and reworked over months or even years with layered applications of oil and enamel until the final juxtaposition is just right. He creates swaths of luminous space within the confines of his constructed borders, channeling and energy and aesthetic that could be likened to abstract expressionist West Coast artist, Richard Diebenkorn and his Ocean Park paintings.
The artist draws inspiration from landscapes, architectural facades, or views through windows, and reimagines them in a geometric framework. Familiar scenes are distilled into a grid of composed linework made in graphite and charcoal, where delicate pastel planes are juxtaposed with eye-catching accents of bold color, layered brushwork, or text and collage elements.
Artist Statement
I see this series of paintings as windows that provide alternate views of familiar places - fields, landscapes, architecture, views through windows, etc. Concurrently they are not meant to impose a specific meaning on the viewer, and should be open to interpretation, and hopefully contemplation.
From a process standpoint I tend to ruminate on certain visuals or ideas for a long time - but usually don't work from anything specific (although if I do it is original pictures of buildings or landscapes). I have certain shapes and colors I gravitate to, but I like to let the painting inform me once it starts, and it can change completely from start to finish. I tend to paint and draw with graphite and charcoal, and then over-paint and make revisions as a work develops. One thing that has changed over time is the ability to come back to certain works months or even years later and continue the process until a piece is complete.

Anne Francey has been working with subject matter inspired by nature for most of her artistic career. Since the pandemic, this focus has become ever more apparent as her new acrylic paintings on paper demonstrate her intuitive process of reinterpreting literal subjects like leaves, flowers, birds, or bugs into vibrant worlds of layered color. She begins by drawing from life but then allows fluctuating colors, traces of the hand, and evidence of the physical medium to be introduced as the composition evolves and finds its final imprint on the surface. The spontaneity of her process welcomes the unknown, she explains: “The things that moved me first…might have become by now just a faint whispering. But I know that a story is being told, even if I don’t understand yet all the words.”
About the artist:
Anne Francey was born in 1956 in Grandson, Switzerland. She attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Lausanne (ECBA) from 1976 to 1981, where she received a diploma of Fine Arts in painting. In 1981, she moved to New York where she attended the School of Visual Arts and the graduate program of Fine Arts at Hunter College. She graduated in 1987 with a Master of Fine Arts (MFA).

Abstract NINETEEN NINETEEN is one of the largest paintings of this ever growing body of work by Aaron A. Young. Referencing the work of Sam Francis, Frankenthaller and deKooning, the abstract color fields and interrupted lines are meant to draw the viewer into the piece to find an ever evolving composition. Using a continuously changing palate of colors and a multitude of layers of paint and collage, the work conveys texture and weight derived from obliterating some details of the past while accentuating others. With this, the process of the piece is preserved, creating almost an archeological experience for the viewer; discovering details the deeper you look. Hard edges meet soft, spontaneous and organic drips of paint overlap with meticulously created linework. The typography of old newspaper is hidden, yet also framed, by brushstrokes making windows into the inner layers of the work. There is always something to discover.
