About the Item

The title of this painting comes from the soft glow you see at night in or near a city, where the sky is never totally black. There's always a halo of light that makes the world seem magical. I started this painting by watering down acrylic paint to the point where it tends to blend like watercolors. Although I guide the paint, I also let the colors and shapes develop naturally. Then I paint over that with oils, making sure to let much of the underpainting show through. The interplay of colors creates a sense of movement and immediacy that keeps the painting fresh. You can see that particularly in the purple area of this painting, where the original color shines through. The painting process I use lends itself to creating organic forms, which I then tighten up with structural lines. This free-form technique mirrors the larger theme of my work: the hard edges of our structured world contrasted against the organic forms of the natural world.
