About the Item

o.T. (GRF15LV) is a unique small size contemporary modern wall sculpture painting relief by German artist Dieter Kränzlein. This sculpture relief is carved from a single block of limestone, treated with a thin layer of specially developed green ink that penetrates into the limestone. Due to the properties of the limestone, small inclusions of organic materials can be seen, giving a really nice natural touch to this otherwise minimalist work. The sculpture relief hangs slightly free from the back wall, creating a floating visual experience, where different viewing angles result in different relief patterns. It can be presented as a solitary work as well as part of a combined hanging with other works from this series. The sculpture relief is dated and signed by the artist on the back. Dieter Kränzlein (1962, Germany) took on an apprenticeship as a stone sculptor when he was twenty years old, inspired by the work of a stonemason that he met. After completing his apprenticeship he accidentally met with Hungary-born painter-sculptor Franz Dakáy who lived in the same village. Visiting Dakáy’s studio, Dieter immediately knew what he wanted his future to be. He decided against formally studying art and instead became a personal student of Dakáy. After four years Dieter started his own studio as a self-employed artist. He works primarily with Norwegian marble and Mooser limestone, out of which he creates freestanding sculptures and wall reliefs. Using an angle grinder, he transforms the shape and surface of the marble and limestone into objects with regular and irregular grid patterns giving the stone rhythm and movement. The combination of his artistic signature and the material properties result in unique works of art. His marble pieces reflect light when played in the sun through their crystalline properties, whereas limestone with its iron packed inclusions is looking fragile and porous. In his recent works he has started to apply ink to the marble and limestone. Using red, yellow, green and blue ink he transforms the original materials once more. From a distance the natural skin of the material is hidden by these colors, but at close-range the original surface with its carved and ground looks has a strong impact on the viewer. It is as if one can feel the inherent time contained within the stone and the countless days and weeks that went into the making of these objects. Over the last twenty years Dieter Kränzlein’s works have been exhibited at prestigious art fairs all over Europe as well as in the USA, Canada and Australia. His work is part of numerous collections, including the Regierungspräsidium Stuttgart, Landesbank Baden-Württemberg, Museum Biedermann, Portland Museum of Art, Oregon, and the City of Overland Park, Kansas.

Artist: Roger König b. Dessau, Germany (1968) Master student of Kurt Schönburg, HWK Halle, Germany. König combines modern painting with acrylic with old techniques and in this way, he connects contemporary art with tradition. The natural clay color bestows the pictures with a completely special dim texture which stands in an exciting contrast with the delicate luster of the acrylic color. The features of the clay color allow a more intensive treatment of the surface. Often, there are lines, scratches or breaks in the surface, as if the canvas had been covered with a fair patina. More subtle strokes in the color bring graphic characters to mind, color gradients natural phenomena, divided canvasses the contrast which is immanent in everything: the principle of yin and yan.
