About the Item

G. Caliman Coxe, an influential African American artist born in 1935, is celebrated for his vibrant abstract works that explore themes of identity, history, and spirituality. A graduate of the University of Maryland and the New York School of Visual Arts, Coxe's artistic voice has resonated through various exhibitions, solidifying his place in contemporary American art. His 1980 painting "Exodus 28" is a compelling example of Coxe’s mastery in color and form. Measuring 22.5 x 92.25 inches, this oil on canvas piece offers a versatile display, functioning beautifully both horizontally and vertically. The painting bursts with dynamic hues of orange, green, and yellow, merging into larger geometric shapes that evoke a sense of movement and vitality. The title "Exodus 28" likely refers to a specific chapter in the biblical Book of Exodus, which discusses the construction of the priestly garments for Aaron and the responsibilities of the priests in ancient Israel. This chapter carries themes of identity, transformation, and cultural heritage, resonating deeply with Coxe's exploration of these concepts in his artwork. "Exodus 28" serves as a visual metaphor for transition and journey, reflecting the themes of change inherent in its title. Through the vibrant colors and abstract forms, the painting invokes a sense of transitions—both physical and metaphorical—paralleling the spiritual journeys depicted in the Bible. This connection enriches the viewer's experience, inviting contemplation on the significance of change and the wearing of one's identity. Ultimately, "Exodus 28" exemplifies Coxe's artistic vision, where color, form, and meaning converge to create a resonant dialogue that continues to inspire and captivate audiences. EXODUS 28 can be displayed either horizontally or vertically. G. (Gloucester) Caliman Coxe For four decades, G. (Gloucester) Caliman Coxe was considered the dean of African-American artists in Louisville, Kentucky, an art scene in the 1950s and '60s that included Sam Gilliam, Bob Thompson, and Kenneth Victor Young. Born in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Coxe moved to Louisville in 1924 where his parents were accomplished watercolorists. He worked as an illustrator and display artist for the Lyric and Grand Theaters and an illustrator at the Fort Knox Training Aid Center, from which he retired after 20 years. He then entered the University of Louisville to study visual art in his forties. He was the first African American to receive a Hite Art Scholarship and its first African-American fine arts graduate. He exhibited throughout the South, including the 1972 solo exhibition Paintings by G. C. Coxe: 4 Phases at the Carl Van Vechten Gallery, Fisk University in Nashville, TN. His retrospective Rags and Wires, Sticks and Pantyhose Too was held at the Allen R. Hite Art Institute, The College of Arts and Sciences, University of Louisville in 1995. (Swan Galleries)
