About the Item

This vibrant, non-objective abstract watercolor by 20th-century San Francisco artist Hildegarde Haas (1926-2002) is part of her Classical Music Series. Titled "Bach - English Suite No. 2 in A Minor - V Bourree", the painting translates the essence of Bach's music into dynamic color and form. Dominated by bold hues of red, magenta, yellow, orange, blue, and pale green, it captures the emotional depth of the music, offering a visual symphony of expression. Signed by the artist in the lower right and titled in the lower left, this stunning work is presented in a custom frame with outer dimensions of 19 ¼ x 22 ¾ x ¾ inches. The image size is 11 ½ x 15 ½ inches. The painting is in excellent vintage condition and offers a unique opportunity to own a piece of Haas' musical and artistic legacy. About the Artist: Hildegarde Haas, a talented artist with synesthesia, studied at the University of Chicago, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center under Vaclav Vytacil, and the Art Students League. Moving to California in the 1950s, she became an active member of the San Francisco Art Association, the Art and Crafts Co-op of Berkeley, and the Oakland Art Association. Her condition of synesthesia—where stimulation of one sensory pathway leads to involuntary experiences in another—allowed Haas to visually translate the experience of music into her paintings. This unique ability defined much of her work, including this piece inspired by Bach’s English Suite No. 2 in A Minor.
