About the artist :
Like most artists, I've been a maker since I was a little kid. I loved to experiment and get dirty doing it. I worked with crayons, markers, paint, plaster, paper-mache, pipe cleaners, paper, nails, glue, wood, and of course, glitter!
My degree was in fine art with an emphasis in painting. I had the privilege to study under Wayne Thiebaud, an incredible teacher and human being. However, I continued my education and career in graphic design. My career took me to the corporate world where I found myself quickly moving away from the creative and into management.
My visual language allows me to go where words can’t in expressing who I am at my core. My daily commitment with the canvas before me is to get out of my head, to set thoughts and words aside, and stream feelings directly.
I use many tools beyond brushes... leaves, branches, mops, plastic, knives, wire, and most often, my hands. I still love to experiment and get dirty!
The process is like a piece of music, a walk in the woods; it's a feeling of excitement, empowerment, and a deep connection all mashed together. If I can stay out of my head long enough, the resulting image is fresh, alive, and evocative.
There is a vibration, a communication and energy, that connects everything in this universe, and when I paint I feel alive and connected to that energy.
Memories, emotions, spirituality and science inspire my abstract paintings. I strive to create paintings that pull one in from afar, and will inform, change, and challenge in the detail up close.

Jane Burton
Jane Burton is a multidisciplinary artist unafraid of tall tasks and getting a little messy. In fact, she revels in it, allowing her artistry to flow freely as she expresses herself through dazzling abstract paintings and magnificent totemic sculptures.
A UC Davis graduate, Burton studied under American painters Wayne Thiebaud and Roy De Forest as well as American sculptor Robert Arneson during the late 1970s. Filled with a passion for making art, she continued into graduate school studying graphic design and eventually found herself working in a corporate environment. The pressures and timelines of the job took their toll on her and it took two special locations to reunite Burton with her passion for ceramics and painting.
In Abiquiú, New Mexico, Burton worked alongside Indigenous potters which rejuvenated her imagination, culminating in the large figurative sculptures that she exhibited in her first solo show. Later, around 2012, Burton completed a six-week residency at the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity in Alberta. In Banff Centre’s artist studios, which are stationed in the majestic Canadian Rockies, Burton made art on her own time and, free from pressures and deadlines, returned to painting.
Since 2012, Burton has been the recipient of three more residencies at the Banff Centre and one stay in 2020 at the Buffalo Creek Art Residency in Gardnerville, Nevada. She has exhibited extensively in California including at The Artery, a two-person show with abstract painter Donna McGinnis at William Merrill Gallery and serial exhibitions at Sonoma’s New Leaf Gallery.
