This beautiful oil painting immediately demands attention with its heavy use of mica pieces. The artist uniquely integrated raw cuts of mica into the oil paint. Some of the mica shines bright without any pigment, while in other sections of the painting the mica is painted over, making a very unique range of textures, color and light. This was part of Jared FitzGerald's early series of works that included mica and coal that he dug up in the mesas of New Mexico. The series was done in the early 1980's and this work was completed in 1984. It was only recently offered publicly and has been kept in pristine condition since the 1980's and re-framed in the sleek, contemporary, white frame, as shown in the installation shots provided. The heavy use of mica suggests that this early work inspired FitzGerald to seek out other materials to work with that offer the same luster of the mica. Thus, in a way this early painting style pushed the artist to find the medium of ceramic. His current work is focused on integrating vibrant colors with traditionalist Chinese porcelain and "Forgotten Paradise" seems to foreshadow this technique/ style. In an interview the artist commented on this series of Mica/ Coal paintings from the 1980's: "With the spirit of curiosity and adventure my wife and I began to spend the Summers in New Mexico. As is often said, New Mexico is considered ‘the Land of Enchantment’. Their the landscape and the light is remarkable. I would often explore the hills that surrounded the town. During one of these trips I found that along some of the hillsides that there was a bright white cut into the land. I went to one of those white places and I found that it was actually an open pit mine that had been worked seventy years earlier. This is where prospectors has set up a tent and with pickax and shovel and tubes of dynamite, they would dig into the land in order to uncover mica. The mica was being used for radio tubes. Each site had their own unique names, Queen of Sheba, Little Pit, Big Bug.6 When I walked to these sites I could see that there were sheets of mica that had been strewn across the white silicates and quart. I collected some pieces of the mica and took them back home. I thought that if I would put the mica directly into the oil of the canvas that the beauty and shinny transparency of the mica could look interesting and be beautiful to look at. I then thought about what other materials I could use to paint with. Below the hillsides there are small rivers and it is there that a variety of different colored sands; Red, Green and Brown can be found. These are the same sands that are used to provide the finished color of the Adobe rooms. So I began to use sand in the painting. The sheets of mica were placed next to each other, like the points of the stars in the sky. When I used the sand I would hold the sand in my fist and let it drift across the oil paint so that it created the surface of the landscape. The Mica was being placed, the Sand was a drifting color; however, I wanted a material that I could draw with. So I went to a coal yard near the town and picked up some big pieces of rock coal. When I got back home I used the head of a metal hammer and pulverized the coal into small grains of coal. I could then directly draw with the coal and handful by handful I would make curved and straight lines. This resulted in paintings that were original landscapes and that used the materials of the land. All this was inspired by the thought of 'what could happen.'" -J. FitzGerald
