About the Item

This painting by Linda King Ferguson, like all of her work, Depicts an abstaction of the female body. An oblong pink shape jutts out from the top of the diamon-shaped canvas. A teardrop-shaped cut has been made at the bottom of the pink abstaction, though the piece of canvas still remains attached on one side, revealing that the back of the canvas has been painted bright red. Her Equivalence Series began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution. The Essay includes a large reproduction of Mary Heilmann’s 1979 painting "Save the Last Dance for Me." In this work she painted a black field with 3 floating pink rectangles, colors signifying the disco era that referenced a significant period of feminism. Inspired by it, some of Linda's earliest works of the Equivalence Series were primarily black with pink. From there, her color evolved to become sourced from lipstick and nail polish color charts, signifying hues coordinating with flesh tones made for women to use and wear. "Red has so many emotive associations, depending on its saturation, tone, and context- like hair, skin, blush, blood, wine, love, the heart, the hearth, heat, passion, sex, rage, fire, fire trucks, stop signs and light, power, and the root. For me red is an interior light, the light of a womb if lit; cradled, safe, and loved. When I close my eyes, I see first a dimmed red, the hue of body, the color of our interior and exterior life and humanity." Linda King Ferguson lives and works in Munising, MI and Nashville, TN. She is in residence semi-annually in Brooklyn, NY. She has a MA from Rhode Island School of Design, and received an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts. She also has studied at Academia Di Belle Arti in Perugia, Italy, and Penland School of Crafts. Ferguson has been awarded several art residencies including Ragdale and The Morris Graves Foundation and exhibited widely, including the exhibitions, Fiber Optics, Minus Space, Brooklyn, NY and Stomach Acid Reflux. This painting is featured in a gallery show that will end in late March and therefore will not be available to ship until then.

EQUIVALENCE 124- Acrylic on cut Linen - Red, Pink Abstract Geometric Painting
By Linda King Ferguson
Located in Signal Mountain, TN
This painting on cut linen canvas by Linda King Ferguson depicts a diamond shape that is dominated by a horizontal vesica piscis shape. The two intersecting circles are a dark salmon orange and a deep wine red (left to right). The canvas at the intersection of the two circles has been cut and peeled back to reveal that the back of the painting has been painted pink. While the trangular shape above the interseccting circles has been painted an ashy brown, the lower section has been left raw. Her Equivalence Series began as a feminist project; works that subvert the historically male gaze and a material language speaking of gendered concerns. Her color choices first came from Helen Molesworth’s essay, Painting With Ambivalence, published in WACK! Art of the Feminist Revolution.
