“Pigeons 312” by Linda Touby, circa 2010. Oil and wax on canvas, 36 x 36 inches. This painting features textural stripes of bright pigments including yellow, orange, blue, black, and white.
This beautiful painting is from Linda Touby's popular Pigeons series, which was inspired by Picasso's work in the south of France. The color palette and richly, textured surface is created through an accumulation of multiple layers of applied oil mixed with wax. The luminous surface create a timeless "fresco" like surface.
Touby's abstract paintings are meditative in size and seductive in color. The artist pairs intuitive brushstrokes with bold, horizontal bands of vibrant color offering a sense of balance and harmony. The restrained, calming palette of earth tones gains intensity and an illusion of spatial depth and volume through the artist's employment of Renaissance techniques of layering the surface with wax, dry pigment and thick glazes. At times Touby's wild, visceral brushstrokes reclaim an expressionist spirit. These combined qualities bring her canvases to life, gently pulling the viewer into the depths of the artist’s subconscious.
A native of Florida, Linda Touby moved to New York as a teenager and earned her BA Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. She thereafter attended The Art Student's League studying under the tutelage of renowned painter Richard Pousette-Dart. Touby has been exhibiting her paintings for the past 30 years and has been included in numerous solo and group exhibitions at museums and galleries, both nationally and internationally including the Museum Fur Konkrete Kunst Ingolstadt (1999), Germany, and the US Embassies in Kuwait, Belgrade, Bujumbura Burundi, and Paris. Her paintings have been incorporated in many private and public collections, including General Motors Corporation, Phillips Corporation, Bertholon - Roland Corporation, and the United States State Department in Washington, DC.
Linda Touby
Florida-born painter Linda Touby began her exploration into abstract art at Pratt Institute in New York City, where she earned her BA. She moved on to the Art Students League — where she studied under acclaimed Abstract Expressionst artist Richard Pousette-Dart — and later taught at the National Academy of Art.
Touby largely worked in abstract mode, and the gestural marks and raw, reactive brushtrokes that characterize some of her paintings lend an Expressionist feel to her art. Her evocative “Je T’aime” series of paintings, shown in early 2019, proved to be an outlet for her as she grieved the loss of her husband, artist Basil Gogos, who died in 2017. This series saw Touby working with subdued pastels as often as she was rich layers of red and blue.
Touby had a range of solo exhibitions around the world, including at U.S embassies in the Bahamas, Estonia and Kuwait as well as at American galleries like Alex Gallery in Washington, D.C., and the Tribeca Gallery and Bill Hodges Gallery in New York City. Touby also participated in group exhibitions at museums and galleries around the world such as the Museum für Konkrete Kunst and the Provincetown Museum. Her work is held in the collections of General Motors and the Phillips Corporation.
