About the Item
This painting is very important because is published as cover on the last monographic catalogue dedicate to Lucio Perna's artworks. I was also choosen for a full page on the Arte magazine, one of the most important in Italy.
Lucio Perna's surrogate cities and slums also carry with them the concept of "boundaries," which are meant to represent the limitations that each person carries within himself by culture, training, social background, education, and against which he sometimes happens to find himself struggling in the desire or hope of getting rid of them forever.
They are the anxieties, prejudices ,insecurities, frustrations, and fears towards those " different " by race, political, religious, sexual orientations, etc. .
An ideal society needs, at the very least, to explore the reasons for its limitations, to assess them in their proper scope, to grasp and understand changes in the social fabric, to develop a critical judgment whether affirmative or negative.
The artist's task is simply to point out the problem, evidently , certainly not to solve it. The function is fulfilled even if only one of its observers will be sensitized and stimulated to reflect on the issue the work proposes.
This paintind is a diptic beacuse for the ease of transportation it is divided in two separate canvases.

1946, Palmi, Italy Lucio Perna arrived in Milan in the late 1970s and came into contact with Remo Brindisi, Ernesto Treccani and Aligi Sassu. In March 1998, he founded the 'SYMBOLICUM' movement with Federico Honegger, Fabio Masimo Ulivieri and the poet and art critic PEDRO FIORI, the group's theoretician. With his most recent works, Perna traces a very personal research path that goes beyond the label of abstraction or informal appeal. In his works one can read a liberating gesture that tears and creates. From time to time he moves like a geologist or a topographer, declining emotions on the surfaces through tonal adjustments and modulated shifts in perspective. The space of the image expands like 'chromatic magic'. Structures are reduced to the essential. Signs, shapes, colours merge in his iconology into 'silent messages of words never spoken': a style-language made of silences. This expressive research brings Perna closer to the artistic-cultural movement "EMOTIONAL GEOGRAPHY", born in the United States at the beginning of this new century, of which Giuliana BRUNO, professor at Harvard, is the theorist, and which in Italy has been supported and popularised by the magazine "ARIA". Since 2019 she has been permanently collaborating with Almach Art Gallery for the presentation of new projects. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)
