About the Item

Living in temples and the countryside with craftsman communities in Japan for over a decade, Majio was deeply influenced aesthetically and by the content of Japanese culture. Her craft apprenticeships and Zen practice in Kyoto was steeped in traditional practices where spirit was not separate from matter. This animistic base is seen throughout her work. From Majio’s visual journal: Anvil and Bellows is acrylic paint on a wood panel that reflects the experience of the forge across from my studio. Continuous sounds of the blacksmith’s hammer and fire amplify and fade with my attention. During Covid, however, the resounding heartbeat and smoldering smell of the forge echoed an especially strong timbre. It seemed to go right through my body magnifying and echoing the menacing nature of outside fears. Although I had no plan to articulate the forge metaphor it emerged in this painting as how destruction is part of creation. Not only the materials but the environment deeply influences how Majio has come to honor the aspects that contribute to any visual work and this piece is a good example. No longer sole agent, she feels she is involved in a collaboration with the materials themselves having life force with their own quirks, ease and voice.
