All The Ancient Rocks I Ever Met (II) is a contemporary acrylic painting on board by Mary Scott. In the early part of my career, I was a geologist, and my favourite rocks were the oldest ones, more than 500 million years old. They had fascinating names like ‘breccia’, ‘agmatite’, ‘banded ironstone’ and ‘stromatolite’. Originally igneous and sedimentary rocks, they had been affected by processes involving extreme heat and pressure within the earth to create metamorphic rocks with new mineral and structural characters. This painting started out as an abstract of shapes and layers, and some of the delicate and interesting textures were created by using pieces of collage paper which I then peeled off when the paint was starting to dry to reveal strange surfaces beneath which were reminiscent of ancient rock fragments. More layers of paint were added, and when dry, I carefully sanded off some parts to explore what lay beneath. I added glazes, and also gold leaf with a silver finish which I partly rubbed off to create ragged metallic areas, similar to minerals such as iron pyrites or ‘fool’s gold’. I really enjoyed this creative process as it seemed that every ancient rock I had ever come across was popping by to say hello! The colours I chose included blue and green sea colours as I wanted to create an abstract reminiscent of rocks on the coast, and parts of the resulting painting resemble miniature rocky landscapes. Recalling memory and emotion of past experiences in both time and place, captured and imprinted on my mind, is very important to me when I paint. I have had a lifelong love of being immersed in ancient landscapes and wild places, enhanced by reading earth sciences at university. My approach to painting is largely intuitive. I may start out with a sense of direction, but then investigate colour, shape and textural mark-making in an open and exploratory way, building thicker and thinner layers of paint and glazes, before scraping back to discover what lies beneath. This process of revealing glimpses, half-hidden things and curious marks develops contrasts between the ancient permanence of rock formations, landscapes developing through time, and the present and future possibilities of the elements above. Based in Shipton-under-Wychwood in the Cotswolds, in 2020-21, I am excited to be heading regularly to St Ives in Cornwall where I will be taking part in the year-long mentored Porthmeor Programme at the School of Painting.
