About
"Minnie and Mickey," an original mixed media on paper by Michaele Vollbracht, is a piece for the true collector. This unique work was executed by Vollbracht for Margot Rogoff, a former fashion executive most notably known for work at Bloomingdales. Vollbracht had a close relationship with Margot for decades that began when they worked together at Bloomingdales, and this work captures that relationship of two iconic fashion personalities of the time. Vollbracht's style and artistic abilities transcended fields, yielding a remarkable following both in fashion and fine art. This masterful original artwork is perfect for those who have an affinity for fashion, Mickey, Minnie, Disney, abstracts, contemporary paintings, and color-rich works of art.

About the Artist: Michaele Vollbracht, an American artist, was an exceptionally popular illustrator and designer, famous for his designs made fashionable by the celebrities of his day.
Vollbracht was born to a military family in 1947 in Missouri. After high school, he moved to New York to pursue a career in fashion design. He studied illustration at Parson’s School of Design alongside Kay Unger and Willi Smith, graduating in 1969 with the school’s prestigious Normal Norell award.
In 1969, Geoffrey Beene made him a member of his design team – beating out Issey Miyake – after sketching Lynda Bird Johnson’s wedding wardrobe. By 1971, he was designing for Donald Brooks Boutique. Two years later he joined Henri Bendel, courtesy of Geraldine Stutz, and became their house illustrator. He learned quickly by tracing the work of Kenneth Paul Bloch.
In the 1970s, Bloomingdale’s recruited him, and there he drew portraits of celebrities like Calvin Klein, Ralph Lauren and Jean Muir. But it was a bag featuring his sketch of a partial profile of a woman with towering cheekbones that became an iconic symbol for the brand, and sky-rocketed his fame. The bag is currently stowed in the archive at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum in New York.
In 1978, he introduced the Michaele Vollbracht Collection, and the line was a smash, landing in high-end stores and in the homes of celebrities like Joan Rivers and Diahann Carroll. The following year, he received the prestigious Coty American Fashion Critics Award: Designer of the Year, the equivalent of the Council of Fashion Designers of America.
But it wasn’t long before his business began to suffer, and he closed it to focus on art. He went on to produce collages and drawings for The New Yorker, and sketched icons from designers such as Carolina Herrera, Cathy Hardwick and Mary McFadden to celebrities like Brooke Shields, Joan Crawford, Greta Garbo, Elizabeth Taylor, and Diana Vreeland. He found particular inspiration in the starlets, likening himself to directors like George Stevens who see the world in cinematic frames.
Mr. Vollbracht returned to the runway in 2002, taking over from Lars Nilsson as the creative director of Bill Blass Ltd. With Vollbracht at the helm, he suited up such notables as former First Lady Laura Bush, Jessica Lange and Janet Jackson. Prabal Gurung was among the staff at that time, too.
Receptive at first, the fashion world became disenchanted. He used his favorite runway stars from back in the day – Pat Cleveland, Karen Bjornson, Sara Kapp – but the fashion scene had changed. Vollbracht turned back to painting. His fashions, however, were resurrected from time to time in collaboration with Freddie Leiba and others, worn by stars like Renée Fleming, Angelina Jolie, Janet Jackson and Beyoncé.
In 2018, Michaele Vollbracht passed away in Florida. At the time of his death, Vollbracht was at work on a book of his illustrations, including Ginger Rogers and other film stars with the art director Steven Cohen.
In his passing, Kay Unger said, “His art was so much a part of his fashion… He was his own kind of Matisse and Picasso all in one.”
