About the Item
In this lovely abstract painting, the sky often represented in Noreen Taylor’s work, is a collage of colours—pink, orange, mauve, blue, and white. Taylor’s pieces explore the colour, form and patterns found in the natural world. As an artist, she is most interested in the emotion that each piece evokes.
“Through the pattern made by the clouds, one could see the brilliant transparency of the sky and you just had to marvel at how anything could be so transparent. In the sky, nothing was there and yet you could see colours. It was amazing.” Noreen Taylor
Born in 1947 and raised in Toronto, Noreen Taylor acquired both her B.Ed. and a M.A. in Art History at the University of Toronto. Taylor is a highly respected businesswoman, visual arts teacher and philanthropist who has helped shape art policy in the Toronto area. She has been a board member of several key arts organizations including the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Gardiner Museum. Taylor chaired the McMichael Canadian Collection of Canadian Art and was the founding Artistic Director for the Claude Watson School for the Arts. Since the 1970’s she has exhibited in numerous solo, and group shows in Canada and the U.S. She has also contributed illustrations to several publications.

Noreen Taylor
Noreen Taylor has a lifelong interest in the arts and arts education. As an exhibiting artist, she has a history of more than twenty public exhibitions, and her works are represented in a number of public and private collections. She taught art and art history, overseeing the Claude Watson School for the Arts (at Earl Haig Collegiate Institute) as its founding Artistic Director. The death of her husband Charles demanded a change of lifestyle, and her passion for the arts was then manifest in her past positions as Chair of the McMichael Canadian Art Collection, Chair of Canadian Stage, and member of the Advisory Board of the University of Toronto Art Centre. Currently, she is a member of the Indigenous and Canadian Curatorial Committee at the Art Gallery of Ontario, a member of the board of the National Ballet of Canada, and a member of the board of the Gardiner Museum. She was the founder of the RBC Taylor Prize and chair of the board of the Charles Taylor Foundation. For her commitment to the arts, she was made a Member of the Order of Canada in 2016.
Remaining committed to the area of education, she served as Chancellor of University of Ontario Institute of Technology (later named Ontario Tech) and received from it an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 2021.
Health care is another major area of her concern. Following the lengthy illness of her husband, she became committed to patient care, first as a community representative for Cancer Care Ontario, then as a force behind the creation of a Palliative Care Centre at Sunnybrook Hospital, and now as Chair of St. Elizabeth Health Care (now SE Health), Canada's largest not-for-profit home care company. She received the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012 for her contribution to Canada.

Artemis and the Cloud Over Arethusa - colorful, abstract, acrylic on canvas
Located in Bloomfield, ON
Washes of colour in blues, orange, and green are expressed in gestural brush strokes in this abstract painting by visual artist Richard Tosczak. Working in collaboration with an Italian artist who is a ‘lover of literature and linguistics’, Angela Letizia Renzi, the two artists have created a series of works that draw inspiration from beloved Italian myths.
This colourful acrylic represents the legend of a beautiful nymph named Arethusa who was threatened by the river god, Alpheus and rescued by Apollo’s twin sister, the goddess Artemis who creates a cloud to hide her. Renzi and Tosczak paint these canvases together and at the same time. Their artistic interaction is important to the works they create.
“… This is our lexicon, our morphosyntax, the grammar of our language.” Tosczak and Renzi
Richard Tosczak was born in Belgium. He studied philosophy and sculpture at the University of Alberta. At that time, Tosczak began working in steel and was influenced by a number of his professors who appreciated the work of a British abstract sculptor, Sir Anthony Caro considered one of the greatest sculptors of his generation.
Further studies were pursued in France with another internationally acclaimed classic sculptor, Martine Vaugel...
