Estate of Norman Carton
Norman Carton was born in the Ukraine, eventually immigrating to the U.S. in 1922 and settling in Philadelphia, where he attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Art. In the 1930s, he received a scholarship to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts (PAFA).
Between 1939 and 1942, the Works Project Administration (WPA) employed Carton as a muralist. During World War II, Carton was a naval structural designer and draftsman at the Cramps Shipbuilding Corporation. Here, he began to create semi-abstract and non-objective sculpture with metal.
After the war, Carton co-founded a fabric design plant in Philadelphia, creating original patterns for interiors and fashion. He was commissioned by clients such as Lord & Taylor, Nina Ricci, and Gimbels. Publications such as Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and Interiors featured his designs. Some of these designs are on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. In 1949, he sold his interest in the plant to pursue painting full-time.
Carton had his first solo exhibition in 1949 at the Philadelphia Alliance, while also teaching classes at the Philadelphia Museum of Art. In 1952, he had solo exhibitions at the Sorbonne, Galerie d’Art, and Gallery Rene Breteau, and was part of many group shows in Paris salons including Les Surindependants, Salon d’Automne, and Realities Nouvelles.
When Carton returned to the U.S. from France in 1953, he settled in New York City where he worked in the company of the leading artists of the day. He appeared in numerous group shows including the 1955-1956 “Exhibit of Contemporary American Painting” at the Whitney. This exhibition included such notable artists as Richard Diebenkorn, Joan Mitchell, James Brooks, Grace Hartigan, Franz Kline, Georgia O’Keefe, and Adolph Gottlieb.
Carton received a great deal of acclaim between the mid-1950s and the 1970s, having solo exhibitions at such prominent galleries as Martha Jackson Gallery, Staempfli Gallery, and Tirca Karlis Gallery, as well as a series of group exhibitions at the Whitney, Corcoran, Dallas Museum of Art, Baltimore Museum of Art, Dayton Museum of Art, and Chrysler Museum. In all, Carton participated in more than 135 group and 20 solo exhibitions.
Carton also was an educator, joining the faculty at the New School for Social Research in New York City, and lecturing at the Pratt Institute, Whitney, and Chrysler Museums of Art. Toward the end of his life, Carton taught at Long Island University.
Carton is widely represented in private and public collections including the Whitney Museum of Art, Smithsonian Museum of Art, Musee d´Art Moderne, Albright-Knox Museum, Yale University Museum of Art, Yoshihara Museum, and many others around the world.
Norman Carton died in February of 1980.

Norman Carton
Norman Carton was an American artist and educator known for Abstract Expressionist works in oil on canvas. While this was his most recognized style and medium, Carton was primarily a colorist and also worked as a muralist, classically trained portrait and landscape artist, sculptor, theater set and fabric designer, and illustrator as well as in a variety of abstractions. He has a large museum collection and commercial history, showing in more than 20 solo and 135 group exhibitions." He was awarded numerous awards, prizes and fellowships for painting. In the 1930s he was part of the WPA creating murals. In the 1940s, he founded a fabric design and production firm which was featured in Interiors magazine, Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, and Women's Wear Daily. These were hand-printed fabrics and his clients were Nina Ricci, Hattie Carnegie, Lord & Taylor, and others. In 1962 Norman Carton opened his own Dewey Gallery in NYC. Carton's works continue to be included in present day exhibitions including at Quogue Gallery entitled 1950s and 1960s Works on Paper,, at the Nassau County Museum of Art entitled Blue in 2020 as well as Energy: The Power of Art in 2019, and at the Anita Shapolsky Gallery in 2019 entitled Inspiration & Exploration. Norman Carton's 2020 solo exhibition at Quogue Gallery was reviewed by Charles A Riley. A representational portion of Carton's papers which include correspondence, writings, notes, exhibition catalogs and sketchbooks were donated to the Smithsonian Archives of American Art where they remain.

Born in Alabama, John Little attended the Buffalo (NY) Fine Arts Academy as a teenager, until 1927. Soon after, he moved to New York where he began operatic vocal training and opened what would become a very successful textile business designing fabric and wallpaper.

Born Sylvan Irwin Goldberg in 1924 and raised in the Bronx, Michael Goldberg was an important figure in American Abstract Expressionism, who began taking art classes at the Art Students League in 1938. A gifted student, Goldberg finished high school at the age of 14 and enrolled in City College. He soon found New York’s jazz scene to be a more compelling environment, and he began skipping classes in favor of the Harlem jazz clubs near campus. Goldberg’s love of jazz would become a lifelong passion and a key component to his approach to composition in his paintings.
From 1940 to 1942, like many of the leading artists of the New York School, Goldberg studied with Hans Hofmann. In 1943, he put his pursuit of painting on hold and enlisted in the U.S. Army. Serving in North Africa, Burma, and India, Goldberg received a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star before being discharged in 1946. After his service, he traveled and worked in Venezuela before returning to the United States, settling back in New York and resuming studies with Hofmann and at the Art Students League.
Living downtown and frequenting the Cedar Bar, Goldberg befriended many of the artists of the New York School. In 1951, his work was included in the groundbreaking Ninth Street Show, co-organized by Leo Castelli, Conrad Marca-Relli, and the Eighth Street Club, and featuring the work of - among others - Hofmann, Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Theodore Franklin (“Ted”) Appleby, Jr. was born January 28, 1923 in Asbury Park, New Jersey to a very prominent family in Monmouth County. He attended the Pauling School in New York and studied at the atelier of John Corneal.
On December 12, 1942, Appleby enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, subsequently seeing action in the Marshall Islands. Upon the conclusion of the war, he was stationed for a year in Yokohama, Japan, where he studied local engraving techniques.
In 1947, after returning home, Appleby moved to Mexico for a year to study mural painting in San Miguel de Allende. Following his sojourn in Mexico, Appleby briefly returned home to the U.S. before ultimately relocating to Paris. There, he joined a lively community of expatriate American artists involved with what would come to be known as the “School of Paris.” Appleby befriended fellow Americans Sam Francis and Jackson Pollock, exhibiting extensively throughout France with the former. He also regularly visited the atelier of Fernand Léger, and was represented in the "Salon de Réalités Nouvelles" and the “Salon d’Automne” during the 1950s and 60s.
From 1955 to 1961, Appleby participated in group exhibitions in Chicago, Leverkusen (Germany), Lisbon, London, and Paris. He also had three notable solo exhibitions during this period: Studio Facchetti, Paris (1956); Martha Jackson Gallery, New York (1957); and the American Cultural Center, Paris (1959). In 1957, Appleby’s work was presented at the 62nd American Exposition of Painters and Sculptors at the Chicago Art Institute, where he was awarded the Norman Wait Harris Bronze Medal and Prize.
Answering the famed artist André Lhote’s call to help save the village of Alba-la-Romaine in the Ardèche, Appleby and his wife - the artist Hope Manchester - purchased a home in the village in 1950, ultimately settling there until their deaths.

Dennis Eugene Norman Burton was a Canadian modernist who was born in Lethbridge, Ontario. He attended the Ontario College of Art from 1952 to 1956, and worked for the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) as a graphic designer until 1960.
Inspired by a 1955 exhibition of the “Painters Eleven” at Toronto’s Hart House, as well as American Abstract Expressionist artists such as Robert Motherwell, Jack Tworkov, and Willem de Kooning, Burton shifted his focus toward abstraction in the mid-1950s.
