About the Item

Using his characteristic rich earthy palette, Otto Rogers has captured the subtle variations in light as it changes along a seashore. This piece has soft grays, rich brown, and black colours highlighted by a flash of royal blue and burnt orange. As one of Canada’s preeminent modernist artists, Rogers found inspiration in both his deep faith as a Baha’i and the beauty of nature so often reflected in his stunning work. This is acrylic and graphite on paper. “The purpose of art is to lift the human spirit.” Otto Rogers He acquired his MA in Fine Art from the University of Wisconsin and later taught at the University of Saskatchewan for almost 30 years. Untitled (Work on Paper) - vibrant, modernist abstract, mixed media on paper
By Otto Rogers
Located in Bloomfield, ON
The vibrant colours—burnt orange, turquoise, black-a touch of green and the dynamic form of this inspired composition is quintessentially Otto Rogers. The modernist artist was masterful in his use of acrylic paints and his work reflected the natural beauty that surrounded his country studio. Saskatchewan born Rogers (1935-2019) was recognized by the NY art critic, Clement Greenberg as a ‘big attack’ painter early in his career and stated that his artwork showed a ‘fullness of inspiration.’ A devout follower of the Baha’i faith, Rogers did not view art as simply a ‘decorative thing.’ “Nature is God...

Charcoal Coastline #5 (Abstract painting)
By Robert Baribeau
Located in London, GB
Charcoal Coastline #5 (Abstract painting) Charcoal on paper - Unframed. Baribeau constructs his paintings layer upon layer, building color, form and texture into viscous, impasto compositions, on supports that are themselves often thick, and even sculptural. He scratches and scrawls across his surfaces, infusing visceral emotion and energy into the work. His imagery is so layered and dimensional that even his works on paper convey a sense of texture and depth. Critics have connected Baribeau to a range of aesthetic positions, including everything from Abstract Expressionism and Pop Art to the 19th century Hudson River School, and compared him variously to the likes of Robert Rauschenberg, Joan Mitchell, Cy Twombly, and Willem de Kooning. In truth, Baribeau employs a distinctive aesthetic voice that is personal and instantly recognizable, despite its multiplicity. His visual world is one where primordial, organic nature collides with the geometric, manufactured world, and where certain signature visual cues, such as black and white stripes, checkerboards, dots, and flashes of neon color appear and disappear. His work is included in several institutional collections, including those of the Neuberger Museum, Purchase, NY; Morgan Stanley...
