About the Item
“The Cloths of Heaven” is a large abstract painting in oil on canvas, 48 x 36 x 1.5 inches, by artist Patricia Crotty. Ethereal strokes of light pink, gray, and white float over darker shapes and forms in black, blue, green, and yellow ocher, in an abstract seascape that evokes the reflections on the surface of the ocean. Starting from a pastel drawing made on-site of the ocean reflecting the sky, the painting evolved to evoke a calm sense of the transcendent beauty of nature. The title is taken from a poem by William Butler Yeats, “He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven,” in which the speaker offers to spread these cloths, if only he had them, at the feet of his beloved. “But I, being poor, have only my dreams,” he concludes. “I have spread my dreams under your feet; Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.”
Patricia Crotty’s colorful gestural paintings are inspired by nature and the hidden forces that lie beneath everyday experience. Her work reflects the tension between chaos and order, fluidity and form, reflecting the natural world’s unpredictability and underlying design.
Inspired by the impressionist sensitivity of Monet and Matisse, as well as the gestural dynamism of Abstract Expressionists Willem de Kooning and Joan Mitchell, her works merge observational starting points with intuitive abstraction. Her process begins with sketches drawn from life, capturing fleeting impressions that she later develops in the studio through an intuitive process of layering and revision.
Her abstract landscapes are responses to the beauty of nature, which is constantly unfolding, reflecting both personal emotion and broader ecological themes. In an era of accelerating technology and climate change, her work aims to reassert a sensory connection to the natural world.
