About the Item
Closed Doors and Keyholes (Abstract Gestural Pastel Palette Square Oil Painting) by Ragellah Rourke
2024
oil on canvas
36 x 36 inches
The sides are cleanly painted so framing is optional
An effervescent palette of light blues, pinks and golds anchors the latest paintings of Ragellah Rourke, a native of the Hudson Valley who has spent the past three decades honing her style of abstraction. Within geometric zones, Rourke applies layer upon layer of oil paint, building a picture plane that is elaborate while ethereal, much like her muse: the countryside of upstate New York. This square composition is punctuated with dark shadows to enhance depth, endowing qualities of architectural abstraction.
About the artist:
Ragellah Rourke has been creating luminous abstract paintings for over 30 years. Working in both oil and acrylic she gradually builds up the surface of her paintings intuitively. Her surfaces are lush worlds which encompass energetic brush strokes suspended over atmospheric backdrops. Occupying an ethereal space, there is a sense of movement in the forms and imagery in which Rourke creates a place that is based in nature, yet is altered, intensified, and poetic. These sophisticated compositions are created through chaos that never reveals a definitive narrative.
Ragellah Rourke was born in upstate New York in 1963. She attended Russell Sage Junior College then the University at Albany where she graduated with a degree in Fine Arts. For the past twenty years she has lived with her family in East Berne, New York. The natural beauty of the countryside surrounding her has been a major influence on her work.
"My paintings are very textural and built up slowly over long periods of time. The surface holds the memory of the painting's development, all the time looking for clues for what will come next. Transparent, watery, washes of paint are applied over parts of the surface, exposing or covering the preexisting marks and textures. I look for connections between the forms that develop. They are never something that I logically calculate, but rather a long string of chances, thoughts, and guesses. The appearance and meaning develop throughout the progression of the painting. It is a continuous search for resolution, balance and mystery within the painting."

Dana Frankfort
In the middle of the road, 2017
oil on canvas over panel
48 x 48 x 1.75 inches
For over two decades, Dana Frankfort has explored the vexing periphery between language and sight by painting words. Rather than laying claim to the paintings, controlling their semiotic pulse, her words serve as the formal armature; they prop up, ventilate, and allow the many layers of paint to breathe. Imperatives, allusions, evocations—the words dissolve into a palimpsest of obscured serifs and stems, into color and form.
The title of the work is a phrase from a poem by Carlos Drummond de
Andrade’s “In the Middle of Road.” Here it is, translated from the Portuguese by Elizabeth Bishop...
