About the Item

My Stories Paintings tell tales gathered from wanderings around the country and around the world. When I am walking I am searching for objects left behind by others, I am making drawings of interesting shapes I come across, and I am generally collecting elements for new painting compositions. These elements find themselves composed into paintings which then tell a story in a painting, and every viewer may recompose them into a story of their own making. Underlying letters suggest the literary context of the written word in story-telling. I find the square format an interesting challenge and a rewarding shape to work on. It is straightforward and honest in its form. I work with slow-drying acrylic paint, and also in oils.

The Traveler, Abstract Painting
By Patrick O'Boyle
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments
"I've always been fascinated by what people see in my paintings," says artist Patrick O'Boyle. He displays an implication of a man traveling the deep void of brilliant hues. Part of his series of colorful abstracts with hints of recognizable subject matter that leaves the viewer room to explore. He combines techniques of collage and painting to unfold a dreamy and entertaining narrative.

About the Artist
Patrick O'Boyle primarily paints in a studio, rarely using reference material other than his own thoughts and dreams. He always paints in a series of five - at the end of the fifth painting he revisits and reworks all of them until he feels they're complete. Using extra-long handles on his brushes, Patrick paints at a distance from the canvas so he can see the works evolve as a whole from the one color he starts with to the vibrant array at the end.

Lost Languages
By Janine Etherington
Located in San Francisco, CA

Artist Comments

About the Artist
Janine’s abstract artworks are created with measured doses of both intuition and analysis. “My work develops as a series of calls and responses,” she says. She adds color, letting gravity pull the paint around. She then responds to the direction of the composition with additional marks, adding and subtracting. The incorporation of recognizable forms, specifically letters and numbers, indicates the influences of Jasper Johns and Robert Rauschenberg on Janine’s work. Janine is also inspired by listening to jazz music. She is a musician herself, and plays in a local Zimbabwean marimba ensemble when she’s not painting.
